NVIDIA remains a formidable force in the discrete GPU sector, yet AMD and Intel have made notable strides in gaining market share during Q3 2025.
AMD and Intel Gain Ground in the GPU Market
The latest report from Jon Peddie Research unveils the dynamics of the Q3 2025 AIB (Discrete GPU) market. This quarter saw the discrete GPU revenue soar to $8.8 billion, with shipments reaching 12 million units, marking a 2.8 percent rise from the previous quarter.

AMD saw its market share climb by 0.8%, reaching 7%, while Intel’s share increased by 0.4%, achieving a 1% market share. Conversely, NVIDIA’s share slipped by 1.2%, dropping from 94% to 92%. This decline is unexpected, particularly as NVIDIA was previously noted for increasing its overall GPU market share.
- The desktop PC’s AIB attach rate rose to 162% for the quarter, a slight drop of 0.6% from the previous quarter.
- The CPU market for desktop PCs fell 7.6% year-over-year but rose by 3.9% from the previous quarter.
Projections indicate that by 2029, the installed base of AIBs will hit 152 million units, with discrete GPUs boasting a 120% penetration rate. This period also saw desktop CPU shipments reach 19.2 million units.

Market Trends and Future Outlook
Total AIB shipments increased by 2.8% from the previous quarter to 12.02 million units. That was less than the historical 10-year average of 11.4% for this quarter. AIB shipments increased by 47.5%.
Q2 AIB shipments were unusually high, which we think was due to panic buying because of the pending tariff. That sapped some sales away from Q3.

Q2 2025 was marked by surging shipments driven by price hikes and tariff concerns. Currently, while no new GPUs have launched, reports indicate a rise in prices, with GPUs being sold below MSRP at major retailers. This situation might trigger a panic-buying trend in Q4 2025 as price hikes are anticipated to impact retail markets by early 2026.
