Chrono Trigger Remake Hope Rekindled After Yuji Horii’s Intriguing Response

A wave of excitement has surged within the gaming community as whispers of a Chrono Trigger remake have resurfaced. This buzz has been fueled by recent statements from Dragon Quest’s creator, Yuji Horii, who remains tight-lipped about the potential project.

In honor of its 30th anniversary, Chrono Trigger is basking in the limelight. Square Enix has rolled out several commemorative initiatives, including a new album featuring piano renditions of its iconic character themes, a popularity poll (where Frog emerged victorious, as per Famitsu), and a series of orchestral concerts slated for Japan this coming January.

Speculation and Hints

The elaborate celebrations for Chrono Trigger have led many to speculate that a major announcement, possibly a remake, might be on the horizon. On November 30, during a program discussion on YouTube, Yuji Horii was directly questioned about the potential for a remake. His playful responses, including “I can’t say,” and “You shouldn’t ask that!”, have sparked even more interest. Kazuhiko Torishima’s humorous exclamations of “There is! There is (a Chrono Trigger remake)!” further fueled the hopes of fans eager for a new version, despite no official word from Square Enix.

Chrono Trigger, which debuted in 1995 for the Super Famicom/SNES, is a beloved title crafted by visionaries such as Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, and Akira Toriyama. Though an enhanced version is available on Steam and smartphones, the call for a modern remake persists among its passionate fanbase.

Community Anticipation

The success of recent Dragon Quest HD-2D remakes has only heightened the anticipation for a similar treatment of Chrono Trigger. One fan expressed on X, “I want to play Chrono Trigger with beautiful graphics like these!” Official posts about the anniversary merchandise have also drawn enthusiastic reactions, with comments like, “If there’s a remake, I’ll definitely buy it!” In a November poll conducted by Dengeki Online, Chrono Trigger was the top choice for receiving the HD-2D remake style.

The situation mirrors that of Final Fantasy IX, which also stirred remake rumors during its 25th anniversary, partly due to the 2021 Nvidia leak suggesting it might be on Square Enix’s agenda. For now, both games’ admirers continue to voice their enthusiasm, hoping for official confirmations in the future. Until then, the gaming community anticipates eagerly, waiting for Square Enix to reveal their plans for these classic RPGs.
