Three years after whispers of its existence, NCSOFT has officially revealed Horizon Steel Frontiers at G-Star 2025. This new MMORPG is set in the beloved world of Guerrilla Games’ action/adventure franchise and will be available for PC through NCSOFT’s PURPLE platform as well as on iOS and Android devices.
A New Frontier in Horizon
The announcement video offers words from Jan-Bart van Beek, now Studio Head at Guerrilla Games, who conceived the original Horizon concept. Van Beek describes this iteration as one that players can engage with “anywhere and at any time” on mobile devices. According to him, Guerrilla Games has already playtested the game and is thrilled about its distinct identity that aligns with the Horizon universe. Beyond the beloved PvE elements, there is also a tease of competitive PvP action.
”You’re sharing the frontier with thousands of other players, sometimes working together to take down machines, other times competing with rival tribes or fighting over resources. That mix of cooperation and competition creates moments that you could never script. At the heart of Horizon’s story is the search for the balance between humanity, nature, and technology. And sometimes that’s harmony, sometimes that’s conflict, but it always creates a world filled with mystery and beauty.”
Innovative Combat Dynamics
Sung-gu Lee, the Executive Producer at NCSOFT, shares insight into the revamped combat design tailored for an MMORPG setting. “In Horizon Steel Frontiers, we’ve added unique, original gameplay elements to the process of taking down giant machines,” Lee explains. Players can utilize the Pullcaster to climb onto damaged machines, set traps, and inflict status effects. Weapons dropped by machines can be picked up and used in future battles, adding a dynamic layer to combat scenarios.
“At the heart of giant machine hunts are two core values: cooperation and strategy. Players must take on their roles, act strategically, and work together seamlessly. These combat mechanics truly shine in large-scale battles, offering the scale and dynamism that only an MMORPG can provide.”
Horizon Steel Frontiers will explore a new region called the Deadlands, inspired by the awe-inspiring landscapes of New Mexico and Arizona, delivering a fresh backdrop for players to discover.
