The ruthless neighborhood murderer turned out to be ... Betty’s dad? Unbeknownst to Betty (Lili Reinhart), Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro)was on a killing streak, determined to eradicate sinners. He murdered seven people in total, including Ms. Grundy, Midge, and The Sugarman.

Jughead's sister Jellybean (Trinity Likins) rallied her friends to become the new neighborhood stalkers—all to draw attention from her brother, who was about to leave for college. The group wore masks of Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and his friends and created graphic murder movies. VHS tapes were planted on characters' doorsteps to spark conversation and spook the town.

Talk about a Cooper family reunion gone wrong. Chic (Hart Denton) pretended to be Charles, his roommate and Betty’s older half-brother, after supposedly murdering him. When Chic started to display strange behaviors (staring at Betty while she slept!), it didn’t take long for his true identity to be revealed.

The former roommates were actually lovers—a fact that came to light when Charles visited Chic in jail. The duo wound up in prison together, yet escaped thanks to Hiram. Then they headed straight to Juniper and Dagwood's party, eager to have Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) officiate their wedding.

The main character’s death was arguably the most tragic turn of events in the series. It almost seemed too brutal to be true—and it was. All along, Jughead was hiding in Dilton’s underground bunker, finding a way to prove Bret and Donna guilty of trying to murder him. Betty, Veronica (Camila Mendes), and Archie (KJ Apa) were in on his plan while other students, and at-home viewers, were tricked.

Betty and Archie kissed, even though Archie was dating Veronica at the time. He even expressed his emotions with a romantic serenade. In a surprising twist, “Barchie” only stayed together to sway others into thinking Jughead had died.

Archie abandoned high-school romance to pursue an older woman: Ms. Grundy, the music teacher at Riverdale High. However, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel) wasn’t who she claimed to be. Her real name was Jennifer Gibson. She had changed her identity after running away from an abusive ex-husband.

After forcing himself on Veronica and Cheryl, Nick St. Clair (Graham Phillips) was chased out of town by Hiram Lodge (Jaime Luna) and injured in a car crash as punishment. However, Nick returned months later and kidnapped Archie, insisting that Veronica sleep with him before he would agree to free Archie. The tables turned when Archie and Veronica used drugs to hold Nick captive instead.

Ashamed of her daughter’s true identity, Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt) sent Cheryl to conversion therapy. She was imprisoned at the Sisters of Quiet Mercy and tortured by Sister Woodhouse. When Cheryl finally escaped, she joined the Serpents, where she could embrace her sexuality with girlfriend Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan).
