CBS All Access' all-new animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks beams up humor to the Star Trek universe.

By Nate Millado

Star Trek is boldly going where no one's gone before: into the bowels of a Federation starship. Star Trek: Lower Decks is an irreverent new CBS All Access animated comedy series that focuses on the misadventures of the ragtag support crew of the U.S.S Cerritos. OK, so they're not quite elite. "We're more like the cool, scrappy underdogs," explains lower-tiered Ensign Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome).

Here's everything you need to know about the highly anticipated addition to the beloved sci-fi franchise.

Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres Thursday, Aug. 6, and streams exclusively on CBS All Access.

So…What's It About?

Space...the funnest frontier? Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place in the year 2380. According to CNET, that means the U.S.S. Cerritos exists around the same time frame as Jean-Luc Picard and his crew. Fun fact: the word "cerritos" in Spanish translates to "little hills," driving home the fact that the U.S.S Cerritos is not as important (or as majestically named) as the starships Enterprise, Voyager, or Discovery.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is the brainchild of former Rick and Morty writer-producer Mike McMahan, so you know it'll be funny! What you may not know is that McMahan is a diehard Trekkie, so expect some reverence—and potential Easter eggs for longtime fans—amid the irreverence.

Star Trek: Lower Decks centers on four ensigns—aka not the folks expected to save the day. Tawny Newsome voices Ensign Mariner, whom the actress described at San Diego's 2019 Comic-Con as a "weirdo rock-and-roll party queen." She's a rule-breaking badass who's good at all things Starfleet and, frankly, should be way further along in ranks.

The complete opposite is Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid). He's book-smart and by-the-book—and desperately wants to be a captain someday. If only he can get out of his own head! Tendi (Noël Wells) is a green-skinned ensign experiencing her first day in the medical bay when we meet her. Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) works in engineering and sports a fresh cyborg implant.

The cast is rounded out by Dawnn Lewis as Captain Freeman, Jerry O'Connell as Commander Ransom, Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs, and Gillian Vigman as Doctor T'Ana.

Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres Thursday, Aug. 6, and streams exclusively on CBS All Access.
