Like his TV alter-ego Chunk—an out-of-the-closet, former college football player turned fashion editor who is now going to law school—Jackson himself possesses a head-spinning plethora of talents and interests.

Throughout his diverse career, Jackson has appeared in 10 Broadway and off-Broadway shows, guested on TV shows from Gossip Girl to The Good Wife, written an award-winning Sesame Street song, recorded an album, and performed with the hip-hop group Freestyle Love Supreme.

As a child, Jackson—who can't remember when music wasn't a part of his life—sang everywhere from the church choir to, when allowed, the family funeral home.

Jackson grew up in a close-knit community in Cairo, Illinois. "Wherever you went," he says, "you knew there was a pair of eyes on you."

Of all the roles he's played, that of George Washington in Broadway's Hamilton will always hold a standout place in his heart: "I think it's going to be something I spend the rest of my life looking back on as, 'Wow, that actually happened.'"

Before his Hamilton run ended, Jackson pulled-off the Herculean feat of filming Bull in the mornings and performing onstage as George Washington at night.

Though he's mostly known as a theater guy, Jackson's start was on TV; in 1994 he played, as an extra, a homeless man on New York Undercover.

Unlike his designer-bedecked Bull character, or occasional glam photo shoots, in everyday life Chris Jackson prefers casual pants, neutral t-shirts, and newsboy caps. "My intention," he says, "is not to project any particular thing."

Jackson, 42, has been married for 13 years to actress-singer Veronica Vazquez-Jackson, and they have two children, C.J., 13, and Jadelyn, 8.

Self-conscious about his lack of a college degree, a fresh-to-New York Jackson embarked on a quest to educate himself, avidly studying the works of social activists like W.E.B. Du Bois and James Baldwin.

Famous for frequently leading the Hamilton cast in a pre-performance prayer, Jackson is known to friends and colleagues as an empathic go-to guy when life is getting them down.

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda actually wrote one of the play's most iconic songs, "One Last Time," specifically for Jackson, whom he befriended when the two worked together on an early version of Miranda's In the Heights.
