The exciting world of handheld gaming just got better! Valve has introduced a highly anticipated update to the Steam Deck that allows gamers to download their favorite titles while the device is in low-power mode. This new feature is set to enhance the gaming experience by offering more flexibility and convenience to users on the go.
Game-Changing Low-Power Mode
Previously, downloading games on the Steam Deck required the screen to be on, but now that’s a thing of the past. Valve has unveiled an update that enables the Steam Deck to complete downloads in a new display-off low-power mode before transitioning to sleep. This feature is activated automatically when the device is plugged in, and it can also be manually enabled through Settings > Power while on battery.
Valve explained that display-off downloads can be accessed in two ways. While downloading content, pressing the power button will prompt a dialog asking if you’d like to continue downloading with the screen off. Selecting “Continue” will switch to the low-power mode. Additionally, the Steam Deck will automatically enter this mode after a period of inactivity.
Feature Availability and Competition
When in low-power mode, any button press or movement will display a status screen showing download progress. From there, users can choose to wake the device or let it finish downloading while in this mode. Though currently exclusive to Beta and Preview channel users, this feature will soon be available to all Steam Deck owners.
Introduced in 2024, the Steam Deck OLED received praise for its vibrant display and improved battery life, making it a tempting upgrade even for existing owners. Valve’s pioneering move with the Steam Deck has sparked a wave of portable PC development, leading to a competitive market with numerous handheld options to choose from.
The Future of Handheld Gaming
Valve may have initiated the portable PC trend with the Steam Deck, but it now faces fierce competition as new handheld devices enter the market. These exciting innovations continue to push the boundaries of what portable gaming can offer.
