Fun fact: Sonequa got a degree in theater from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Her wildest college role was playing Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet—as a woman.

After college, Sonequa moved to Queens, New York to pursue acting. She worked as a temp to make ends meet, and loved the job and the perspective on life the experience gave her.

Her first acting break was the role of a prep school lacrosse player in the indie film Toe to Toe, which wound up in competition at the Sundance Film Festival.

Fun fact: Sonequa didn't watch much Star Trek growing up. While Star Trek: The Next Generation was always on the TV at home, she didn't sit down and watch an episode all the way through until she prepped for this part.
