ALGS Champion SangJoon Steps Down from Professional Apex Legends

Han Sang-joon, popularly known as SangJoon, a distinguished champion in the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS), has made the decision to step away from professional competition. After dedicating four years to the ALGS scene, SangJoon cited his upcoming obligation to fulfill mandatory military service in South Korea as the primary reason for stepping down.

In a statement translated from his online post, SangJoon shared his thoughts, noting the necessity to withdraw from the next professional league due to the looming military enlistment. He mentioned multiple reasons for his departure, with military service being the most significant.

SangJoon’s Noteworthy Achievements

Since 2021, SangJoon has made a significant impact on the esports landscape within the ALGS framework. He has been an integral part of renowned teams, most recently with Crazy Raccoon and REJECT, representing the Asian region. A pinnacle in his career was winning the 2024 ALGS Split 1 Playoffs with REJECT, where he not only propelled his team to victory but also earned the title of event MVP. This victory brought his team a substantial prize of $300,000 (~£221,900).

During his final competitive year in 2025, SangJoon helped Crazy Raccoon clinch eighth place among 30 teams in the ALGS APAC North Split 1 Pro League. Despite a challenging journey, the team left the Mid-Season Playoffs ranked 32nd, securing a prize of $4,500 (~£3,300).

Looking forward, SangJoon expressed in another translated post the bittersweet sentiment of leaving the game, stating his repeated mentions of retirement are now genuine. He conveyed gratitude towards his supporters, acknowledging the thrill of participating in playoffs and achieving victories.

Future Without SangJoon in ALGS

SangJoon’s absence from future Apex Legends competitions will undoubtedly be felt. He will not be participating in upcoming events such as the 2025 Split 2 Pro League, the Challenger Circuits from August to October, or the ALGS 2026 Championship scheduled for January 15th to 18th, 2026.
