The elusive AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT GPU reference edition, based on RDNA 3 architecture, has finally been spotted. Though the card was released in 2023, it was only available through AMD’s board partners and not as a reference design, commonly referred to as “Made by AMD” (MBA). Official AMD materials, however, do showcase a render of what the reference version would look like.
Unveiling the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT Reference Design
Reports suggest that the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT does have a reference design, albeit only as early engineering samples. Leaked images shared on social media reveal a resemblance to the render on AMD’s official site, but with distinct variations. Notably, the sample features a striking red PCB and several exposed connectors, pointing to its purpose for internal testing rather than consumer use.
These prototypes were never intended for public release, explaining the differences from AMD’s showcased designs. The engineering sample is equipped with LEDs near the PCIe slots, serving as load indicators, and it matches the specs known for the RX 7700 XT: a NAVI 32 die with 3,456 stream processors and 12 GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
The Journey and Legacy of the Radeon RX 7700 XT
The Radeon RX 7700 XT, although operational, wasn’t destined for the consumer market, paralleling the custom AIB editions. Initially available earlier this year, its presence quickly faded as the RX 9000 series emerged. The RX 7700 XT was often overshadowed by the RX 7800 XT, priced just $50 higher but offering greater VRAM. Despite eventual price cuts, the preference among consumers leaned towards the more robust 7800 XT.
