ArenaNet Unveils Guild Wars Reforged: A Fresh Take on the Classic MMORPG

The classic MMORPG, Guild Wars, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an exciting update. ArenaNet has unveiled Guild Wars Reforged, a modernized version of the beloved 2005 game, launching on December 3. This upgrade promises to enhance both the visual and gameplay experience, sure to delight long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Guild Wars Reforged is the collaborative effort of ArenaNet and the newly established studio 2weeks, consisting of former ArenaNet creatives. This updated version breathes new life into the original MMORPG and its expansions, adding an HD overhaul that boosts in-game visuals, performance, and user interface. It also introduces full controller support and optimization for Steam Deck users. While current players will receive the update for free, the game will be priced at $20 for new players.

Game director Stephen Clarke-Wilson and 2weeks CEO Brandon Dillon shared insights about the enduring appeal of this subscription-free MMORPG and their reasons for the refresh.

Features of Guild Wars Reforged

  • Current players will enjoy a complimentary update, including free expansions, while new players can access the game for $20.
  • Enhanced HD visuals with improved resolution, ambient occlusion, and bloom effects.
  • Official controller support via X-Input.
  • New accessibility options for better gameplay and navigation, including an optional objective guide.
  • Verified support for Steam Deck.

Originally launched in 2005, Guild Wars gained popularity by offering a flexible and subscription-free gaming experience, setting itself apart from other MMORPGs of that era. The Reforged edition further enriches this experience with significant visual and gameplay improvements, while ensuring that existing players can easily transition to the updated version.

Development for the Guild Wars Reforged edition began in early 2025. Brandon Dillon emphasized the swift progress due to the team’s prior experience with both Guild Wars installments and access to technical archives. “The Reforged edition is not just a remaster but a modernization that responds to the influx of new and returning players, ensuring the game runs smoothly on modern systems,” Dillon noted.

Last April’s anniversary event underscored the game’s resilience over the years, drawing both veteran and new players. It also highlighted areas needing improvement, such as a bug affecting 4K monitor users, which the Reforged version addresses.

Guild Wars Reforged comes as more gamers are eager to revisit classic online games. For the developers, this update was a chance to rediscover the magic of the original Guild Wars and their experiences in developing it. Dillon reflected on the nostalgia of working with past developers and the joy of enhancing a game that has meant so much to the community.
