Bungie’s iconic shooter, Destiny 2, once set a benchmark for live service games. However, it faces challenging times as it battles to recapture its former glory. Both players and industry watchers are keenly aware of this struggle. Game director Tyson Green and core creative director Ben Wommack have shared their vision for revitalizing the game, beginning with the forthcoming expansion, Destiny 2: Renegades.
A Decade of Destiny: A Reflection
Following the conclusion of The Final Shape, the Destiny saga came to a satisfying end. However, this closure led to an unforeseen drop in player engagement. Green acknowledged, “The Final Shape brought things to a crescendo, where it’s like a fantastic ending that tied off a lot of threads… and then the big [downwards] spike in population [came after].” Despite the thrilling conclusion, the game’s momentum faltered after The Final Shape, and the release of Edge of Fate failed to reignite players’ interest.
Green elaborated on the company’s intentions: “That wasn’t the plan from the business perspective… but we had to try something.” Destiny 2 needed to evolve, but the strategies didn’t align perfectly with player expectations.
Pushing the Boundaries with Renegades
The upcoming Renegades expansion is set to bring new life to Destiny 2 with its Star Wars-inspired elements. Scheduled for release on December 2, 2025, the expansion promises a fresh perspective, featuring syndicates, new weapons like Blasters, and the innovative Praxic Blades. Wommack highlights this as a move beyond traditional conventions, stating that it represents a bold step in collaboration with Lucasfilm to deliver something unique within the Destiny universe.
Green noted, “When you’re making something new… you need to re-examine all of them every single time when trying to really create something special.” The new arsenal and gameplay elements are designed to challenge and invigorate players, aiming to keep Destiny 2 captivating and relevant.
The Future of the Franchise
Bungie’s commitment to adapting to player feedback is evident as they prepare for Renegades. Green and Wommack are confident in their direction, but much hinges on how players respond to this new content. Yet, as rumors swirl about Destiny 3, it appears Bungie is considering the franchise’s long-term future. After nearly a decade, a fresh start might be necessary. Renegades could be the boost Destiny 2 needs, but with internal challenges and the game’s current struggles, a new chapter seems inevitable for Bungie.
At least it sounds like Bungie is open to trying for one.
