Destiny 2 is on the brink of launching its highly anticipated expansion, Renegades, which draws inspiration from the Star Wars universe, creating more excitement than ever before. With just a week until release, players were treated to an in-depth live stream showcasing the expansion’s features, topped off with a thrilling new launch trailer.
New Weaponry and Systems
Renegades introduces an array of new weapons, including the Praxic Blade, reminiscent of a lightsaber. Players can also wield blasters, a fresh weapon archetype that uses a heat-based firing system, eliminating the need for traditional reloading.
Exploring the Lawless Frontier
The expansion unveils the Lawless Frontier, a repeatable activity where players can climb the ranks of various Syndicate factions through the Notoriety system. The factions—Pikers, Tharsis Reformation, and Totality Division—offer missions like bounty hunts, smuggling runs, and sabotage excursions. A new Invasion mode allows Guardians to challenge players’ progress in real-time.
Bungie also announced Equilibrium, a new dungeon arriving on December 13, 2025, and released a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Destiny 2: Renegades.
Challenges Ahead for Bungie
While the expansion promises an engaging experience, the real test is whether it can revive Destiny 2’s dwindling player base. Recently, the game hit an all-time low in concurrent players on Steam, failing to cross the 100K mark since July and lingering below 50K since early September. This decline comes amidst other challenges Bungie faces, and a successful launch of Renegades is crucial for the studio’s future.
Steam’s numbers are not the complete picture, but they hint at potential troubles, with a rocky launch potentially spelling further difficulties for the studio.
