Cities Skylines 2 will add new quay and pier for waterfront build

The latest Cities Skylines 2 update brings waterfront construction tools, so players won’t have to work around missing pieces. Players can now build proper quays and piers instead of relying on improvised solutions from existing game elements.

Players used cut-and-fill roads for the waterfront. However, there were construction issues faced in this regard. The development team recognized this issue and reacted with targeted shoreline development tools.

The new quays are created in a manner such that even minor elevation differences are registered. Unlike regular roads and pedestrian pathways which only adapt on account of larger elevation differences. This sensitivity generates automatically the retaining walls on lower ground to deliver the plush waterfront look players have been craving.

Three Quay Options for Different Needs

The update brings three quay sizes to meet the needs of city planners. The narrow option is for vehicles that only allow foot traffic while the medium and wide options allow foot and vehicle traffic within some capacity.

Flexible construction is still being taken into account. Gamers who really want fast results can use the Snap to Shoreline feature. This automatically attaches the quays to the nearest waterfront while keeping the same height above water.

Adjusting the heights can still be done using the normal height controls.

If you would like more control over where the quay aligns to, you should disable the Snap to Shoreline option so that the quay can follow the natural terrain on water level rather than keeping a uniform height. The proposal allows waterfront designs compatible with existing landforms to occur more naturally.

Beyond Water: Creative Construction Possibilities

The new quay system isn’t just for the waterfront.  Players can build these things without needing water nearby. This opens up new ideas for buildings like terraced housing and cliff walkways.  Quays can be built in any place where there are favourable slopes.

Practical limitations that prevent quays from being placed too close to flooding water levels while still allowing adequate design freedom for imaginative waterfront projects are maintained on the system.

Recreational Focus with New Pier System

The revised quays also feature piers for recreational use. There are three different sizes of the pier object available in the path category of the landscaping menu. The object is a pedestrian-only and can be combined to create elaborate pier networks.

Like bridge building, piers have to be a certain height. They may go out over water or they may be elevated for viewing the city. This versatility facilitates traditional waterfront leisure and offers distinctive high vantage viewpoints across the city.

Enhanced Bridge Collection Expands Options

With this update, 2 more types of bridges join the construction toolbox. The Truss Arch bridge has two tracks for trains and looks stunning whether it crosses a gorge or water. This type of bridge can cross over narrow seas if built high enough.

The double-decked bridge economically combine a four-lane highway on the top and two train tracks below.  When highway and rail access is required together, this design has a low-cost solution.

Cargo System Improvements and Bug Fixes

The waterfront infrastructure was recognized to be connected to cargo operations, prompting the development team to solve several issues. With these upgrades, players will be able to enjoy the base game smoother and more easily from the Bridges and Ports expansion which enhances cargo flow mechanics.

Among the main fixes are the resolution of the issue of trucks continuing to visit cargo harbours which have been deactivated, the high taxi and visitor numbers at small parks, and preventing cargo ships from overlapping at deactivated harbours.  The proposal includes further amendments for malfunctions in the cargo displaying equipment in train route information panels and errors in resource calculation during trailer loading operations.

The update is one more step in the evolution of Cities Skylines 2, which now gives players tools for dock building that professionals use, retaining the usual freedom. These additions become an obvious solution for overcoming construction limitations and create opportunities for urban waterfront.
