Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Star Charlie Cox Credits Nomination To Others Following Game Awards Nod

Charlie Cox, renowned for his role as Daredevil, recently made a heartfelt acknowledgment regarding his nomination for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Attending an event in Mexico, Cox expressed his gratitude but insisted that the true credit belongs to the French motion capture artist who brought his character to life.

Recognizing the True Talent

During his speech, Cox shared his excitement over the nomination but underscored the pivotal role of Maxence Cazorla, the motion capture artist behind his character Gustave. “Yes, I’m thrilled for this nomination,” Cox stated. “I’ve said this before and I think it’s important to say: there’s an amazing French actor, by the name of Maxence Cazorla, who did almost all of the motion capture for that role in that game.”

He continued, “So any nomination or credit I get, I really have to give to him — I believe that the performance of that character is really down to him, and my voice was just part of that process.”

A Competitive Field

Cox’s nod for Best Performance at The Game Awards is just one of Clair Obscur’s record-breaking 12 nominations. The game is also vying for numerous prestigious categories including Best Direction and Game of the Year, adding to the competitive atmosphere of the awards. Cox faces competition from his own co-stars, including Ben Starr of Final Fantasy 16 and Jennifer English from Baldur’s Gate 3, who are also contending for their work in the game.

Cox’s Humble Approach

Though the actor voiced a significant character, he has frequently conveyed his minimal involvement in creating Clair Obscur. Back in June, he confessed to feeling like a “total fraud” when praised for the game, acknowledging that his voice work took just four hours in the studio. The following month, he admitted he still hadn’t played the game due to not owning a console at the time. “I remember being in the studio and thinking, ‘This is beautiful, the visuals are extraordinary,’” Cox shared, reflecting on his experience. Cox’s humility and transparency underscore the collaborative nature of game development, a sentiment echoed by many in the industry.

In a recent review, the game was hailed as a “modern RPG classic” for its innovative approach and homage to beloved RPG elements, showing the profound impact of such collaborative efforts.
