Celebrated writer Brian Michael Bendis is making a triumphant return to Marvel Comics, marking a significant moment for comic fans everywhere. After his exclusive stint with DC since 2017, Bendis is back at Marvel for a special appearance in December’s The Avengers #800, rekindling old collaborations and sparking excitement for future projects.
A New Chapter Begins with The Avengers #800
The upcoming The Avengers #800 is set to be a landmark issue, not only as the culmination of Jed MacKay’s journey with the series but also as the stage for Bendis’s return. This issue includes a special 14-page backup story, reuniting Bendis with artist Mark Bagley, known for their work on Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble. In this tale, iconic heroes Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor unite to tackle a dangerous Hydra super-weapon.
Reflecting on his return, Bendis shared, “Returning to the pages of Marvel Comics has been an incredible experience. To reunite with the Avengers on such an anniversary is doubly wonderful because anniversary issues are where we really celebrate our love of the characters and legacy. I made my Avengers debut on Avengers #500. I love the symmetry.”
Rekindling Old Partnerships
Bendis expressed his joy in teaming up again with Bagley, who came out of retirement for this special project. “Just reuniting would be magical enough,” Bendis said. “He has already penciled magical pages. It’s been a wonderful reunion between us AND the characters.” His statement hints at more exciting Marvel projects on the horizon, though specifics are still under wraps.
A Legacy at Marvel
Bendis first made waves in the late ’90s with indie work before earning acclaim at Marvel on titles such as Ultimate Spider-Man and Daredevil. He played a pivotal role in revamping the Avengers with 2004’s Avengers Disassembled and New Avengers, continuing until 2012. Bendis also led major events like House of M and Secret Invasion and co-created beloved characters Jessica Jones and Miles Morales.
As fans eagerly await more from Bendis, speculation abounds on what Marvel titles he might tackle next. The Avengers #800 hits shelves on December 3, 2025. Secure your copy now at your local comic shop.
