Completed My Final Fantasy Tactics Playthrough, Yet These Mods Are Pulling Me Back In

After an epic 61-hour journey, most of it spent mastering Job Points and securing elite weapons, I’ve just wrapped up my first playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. Although I’ve yet to conquer the optional Midlight’s Deep dungeon, my plan to take a break from Ramza Beoulve’s saga has been swiftly altered. The allure of fan-created mods for the PC version of the game is simply irresistible, setting the stage for an even more thrilling experience than before.

Content Restored: Dark Knight, Onion Knight, Balthier, and Luso Return

The Dark Knight and Onion Knight Jobs are now fully functional in Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles
Last month, a passionate fan began resurrecting the content removed from the War of the Lions edition, the version used for current mobile adaptations. Modder Dana Crysalis didn’t stop at just reintroducing characters like Balthier and his powerful Barrage skill or the essential Luso; they’ve also brought back two iconic jobs—Dark Knight and Onion Knight—for generic units. The mod’s execution is impeccable, featuring a new paging system in the job menu that expands the display beyond 19 jobs. Unlocking these jobs still requires effort akin to the War of the Lions version.

Job Requirement
Dark Knight Level 8 Black Mage, Knight, Geomancer, Dragoon, Samurai, and Ninja
Onion Knight Level 6 Squire and Chemist

The Dark Knight’s high unlock requirements are well justified, known for its overpowering Darkness Job Command that offers HP and MP restoration while dealing significant damage with skills like Abyssal Blade.

Introducing New Jobs: Blue Mage and Red Mage

An in-game screen from Tactics Ogre shows a character named Alicia at level 8 with the job 'Blue Mage,' featuring job statistics and options to 'Learn Abilities' or 'Change Job.'

Alicia and Lavian now come with unique Jobs that makes them more than special generic units
Alongside restoring old content, Dana Crysalis has introduced completely new Jobs: Blue Mage and Red Mage, inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. These new roles are available from Chapter 2 and give characters like Alicia and Lavian newfound significance, allowing them to learn a broad range of abilities and magic spells. Even in its current form, this mod is a game-changer, especially for players who previously struggled to utilize Alicia and Lavian.

Level Scaling: Necessary Rebalance

As these powerful new Jobs and abilities come into play, the risk of disrupting the game’s balance looms large; enemies in story battles traditionally don’t level scale. Fortunately, the Level Scaling mod by Dana Crysalis eliminates this potential pitfall. By introducing enemy level scaling to story battles, the game maintains its challenging nature, making sure that even heavily optimized characters will face intriguing challenges. This ensures every epic story battle demands genuine strategic planning, even after meticulous grinding.

After diving into these transformative mods, my intentions for a quick test dissolved into an unplanned immersive session. Reengage with Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and discover how these enhancements make it one of the best tactical RPGs ever, still captivating players decades after its original debut. Are you feeling the pull back into Ivalice too? Share your thoughts and let us know which mods elevate your gameplay the most!
