Conquering the Lampmaster: The Ultimate Boss Challenge in Expedition 33

The formidable Lampmaster serves as the challenging conclusion to Act 1 in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. This light-resistant opponent presents a significant test of skill with its multi-phase battle mechanics and strategic combat requirements.

Mastering the First Phase Combat Strategies

The initial encounter with the Lampmaster features a rhythmic pattern of attacks requiring precise timing and defensive maneuvers. When the boss extinguishes all lights, players must prepare to execute four consecutive parries against light-based projectiles targeting different party members. Timing the parry button precisely as the lamp darkens is crucial. Successfully blocking all attacks directed at a specific party member enables a powerful counterattack opportunity.

This light-extinguishing sequence predictably follows every other attack in the Lampmaster’s repertoire, establishing a consistent combat rhythm. The boss’s jump attack resembles previous jumping enemies, requiring a well-timed parry just before impact to counter effectively.

When the Lampmaster triggers a dark explosion, it focuses on a single Expeditioner with a dark-based assault. Dodging or parrying as the boss begins its descent provides optimal defensive results.

The most devastating attack in the first phase occurs when the Lampmaster harnesses its lamps’ power. As it absorbs energy, players should listen attentively for a distinctive “shing” sound, which signals the perfect moment to parry and unleash a powerful counterattack that can dramatically shift battle momentum.

Navigating the Challenging Second Phase

Upon depleting the Lampmaster’s initial health bar, a cutscene triggers the second phase of the confrontation. This segment introduces the most technically demanding element of the battle: the lamp ritual.

During this sequence, players must carefully observe the order in which the lamps illuminate. When control returns to the party, using free-aim to target the lamps in their activation sequence is essential. This prevents the Lampmaster from unleashing its devastating sword of light attack that can damage the entire party. Successful targeting is confirmed by a green glow emitted from each lamp.

It’s worth noting that the leftmost lamp presents a targeting challenge for the character positioned furthest left, potentially requiring adjustment of character positioning to complete the sequence. Successfully completing the lamp trial will be indicated by a confirmation message, while failure results in facing the powerful light sword attack.

If forced to endure this attack, timing a dodge or parry precisely as the Lampmaster turns with the sword offers the best chance of survival. Given the substantial damage potential, dodging generally provides a safer defensive option.

The Lampmaster’s second phase arsenal includes additional attacks requiring specific counters:

  • When facing a light ball attack, jumping over the resulting wave at the visual indicator’s appearance and following with R2/RT enables an effective counterattack.
  • The flying combo delivers four consecutive hits, each individually manageable, making it ideal for parrying attempts. Using audio cues is vital, with the Lampmaster’s screech signaling the optimal parry timing.
  • Similarly, the dual-arm attack sequence delivers four strikes requiring carefully timed parries coinciding with the boss’s screeches.

Upon successfully overcoming this challenging encounter, players are rewarded with substantial experience points, a Shape of Life to enhance revive capabilities, and a Pictos titled “At Death’s Door.”
