Dead Space 4? Original Creator Glen Schofield Thinks It Could Happen

As we have gone years without hearing anything about Dead Space 4, we may finally be on the verge of reexploring the terrifying hallways of space horror once again. Glen Schofield, the creator of the original Dead Space series and former EA developer, believes that we may indeed one day see a new Dead Space after developments at Electronic Arts. With EA reportedly being sold to Saudi Arabia’s investment group, Schofield sees an opening to revive the iconic Dead Space universe.

Schofield, who heads Pinstripe Games now, has said for a while that he’d like to work on Dead Space again. His last game, The Callisto Protocol, felt a lot like Dead Space, but it didn’t do as well with fans or sell as many copies as people expected. Even so, Schofield has said he still has quite a few ideas for games in the future, maybe even a Dead Space 4.

In the past, the developer said he reached out to EA and brought up the idea of a sequel, but said EA wasn’t interested. He shared the idea of getting some of the core leaders, that led the first Dead Space, back together on a new project, and even shared thoughts on how to minimize development cost, for example, and using models and assets, for example, from Dead Space Remake, which was successfully developed by EA Motive in 2023. As a result of the initial cost-benefit or return on investment uncertainty to do it, EA passed on both ideas or options, and then soon after EA partners shifted digital assets to support a completely new single player brand and ultimately deadline EA’s EA Deal to the original brand Dead Space.

However, with the new circumstances surrounding EA, Schofield believes the potential acquisition may create new opportunities for the IP. With new ownership, he may have an opportunity to move forward with a Dead Space 4, or the franchise could be explored in the world of films, television, or other explorative entertainment media. Many fans are starting to ask again: is there going to be a Dead Space 4? While that has not been confirmed yet, Schofield expresses enthusiasm for interesting conversations with new owners.

If Dead Space 4 does become a reality, fans expect it to continue the narrative beyond Dead Space 3, potentially shifting to a darker and more psychological narrative arc that recalls the haunting mystery of the Marker. The potential Dead Space 4 plot could investigate the origins of the alien infection or follow new survivors who find themselves lost within deep space, blending the horror and science fiction characteristics that have defined their franchise.

Players are also talking about the potential gameplay improvements and technical upgrades. Most fans are expecting Dead Space 4 for the PS5 to feature some new visual landscapes for the series, including ray-traced lighting, ultra-detailed armor upgrade systems, and zero-gravity combat mechanics to enhance the isolation of space. There are even fans speculating about “armor upgrade for Dead Space” as its own feature, looking to add some survival mechanics to the game while maintaining customization.

While EA’s internal direction may still be unknown, the prospect of a Dead Space 2 Remake and a continuation through Dead Space 4 feels increasingly likely. Given the recent popularity of horror reboots and remakes in gaming, the debut of a Dead Space game would instantly be among the most anticipated upcoming games. Until we get official confirmation, a question remains: when is Dead Space 4 coming out? For the moment, only time — and maybe some calls from Glen Schofield — will tell if this legendary space horror franchise will rise again.
