Deus Ex Star Criticizes ‘Psychopaths in Charge’ Amid New Game Anticipation

The anticipation for a new entry in the beloved Deus Ex series remains high, despite a long hiatus and a recent statement from its lead actor, Elias Toufexis. Known for his portrayal of the series’ protagonist, Toufexis recently made headlines by describing the franchise’s overseers with colorful language, hinting at ongoing challenges in reviving the series.

Actor’s Schedule Sparks Speculation

In a social media update, Toufexis revealed his busy schedule for 2026, mentioning his involvement in Bungie’s upcoming shooter, Marathon, along with three undisclosed projects. Fans quickly speculated that one of these could be a new Deus Ex installment, but Toufexis dashed those hopes, stating, “…no Deus Ex because the people in charge are psychopaths.”

Toufexis has been a vocal supporter of reigniting the Deus Ex series, but it’s been ten years since the release of 2016’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Lauded by critics, the game was developed by Eidos Montreal for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Unfortunately, subsequent efforts shifted towards other projects, such as Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving Deus Ex largely forgotten.

Ownership Changes and Uncertain Future

Hope for the franchise’s revival was rekindled when Square Enix sold Eidos Montreal and Deus Ex to Embracer, with reports surfacing about a new game being in development for two years. However, the project was reportedly shelved in 2024 amid Embracer’s corporate reshuffling.

In a heartfelt Reddit post, Toufexis expressed his disappointment, reminiscing about his connection with his character, Adam Jensen. While the canceled game wasn’t focused on Jensen, Toufexis voiced frustration over its termination, particularly as it led to job losses for friends at Eidos. “Alas, his story seems done. I’m relatively certain the game that was canceled was not an Adam Jensen story, so the cancellation angers me more than anything else because friends at Eidos got laid off.

Hope for the Series and Remasters

A year ago, some reports suggested Eidos Montreal was considering another pitch for a new Deus Ex game, though its success remains uncertain. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Aspyr’s delayed Deus Ex Remastered, aiming to polish the original game for a new release after a postponement from its initial February 2026 launch date due to quality concerns. The new release date remains undisclosed, but pre-orders have been refunded.

Toufexis also shared insights from his past, revealing he had been set to voice the main character in Far Cry 3 before being replaced. The switch occurred as his voice had become “too popular” due to his role in Deus Ex.
