Developer Reveals: Dawnwalker’s Freedom Draws Inspiration from Fallout 1 & 2 and Pen-and-Paper RPGs

Independent Polish developer Rebel Wolves is gearing up for the release of its first open-world action RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker. This eagerly anticipated game will be published by Bandai Namco, marking a significant milestone for the studio.

A Fresh Take on RPG Design

Founded in 2022 by former CD Projekt RED developers with the backing of NetEase, Rebel Wolves is bringing a new vision to the RPG landscape. The Blood of Dawnwalker draws visual inspiration from The Witcher III: Wild Hunt but distinguishes itself by offering players unprecedented freedom. Game Director Konrad Tomaskiewicz emphasized this during an interview at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025, stating, “No, there’s no main quest. You build your experience from the quests you encounter.” This approach aligns more closely with classic pen-and-paper RPGs, providing players the autonomy to shape their journey.

Inspirations and Consequences

When comparing The Blood of Dawnwalker to other games, Tomaskiewicz noted its similarity to the first two Fallout games rather than Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Unlike the latter, which has a guiding main quest, Dawnwalker empowers players with a clear goal and optional paths: “You travel the world, you decide what you want to do. There is no main quest.” Additionally, developers have highlighted that the game will impose significant consequences for both actions and inactions, enriching its roleplaying elements.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is set to release next year on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.

This groundbreaking game will be available for players to explore in 2026, offering a unique, quest-driven experience.
