Yuji Horii, the mastermind behind Dragon Quest, has shared his admiration for Final Fantasy X, describing it as “ultimate perfection” upon its release in 2001.
In a conversation with Game Informer, Horii delved into his journey with Dragon Quest, pointing out how it evolved alongside the renowned Final Fantasy series. Although he didn’t view Final Fantasy as direct competition, Horii acknowledged a keen interest in its development due to their shared RPG genre yet contrasting storytelling techniques.
Unique Differences Between the RPG Giants
“When Final Fantasy initially launched, it caught my attention as something worth watching,” Horii explained, emphasizing the distinctions between the series. “A notable difference I observed was the vocal protagonists in Final Fantasy, unlike Dragon Quest, which aims to immerse players as the main characters themselves.”
Horii added, “In Final Fantasy, the players witness the protagonist’s journey, but they don’t embody them, which I found intriguing about the two series.” This perspective seemed to shift with the advent of Final Fantasy X.
“Once again, the characters in Final Fantasy are quite vocal,” Horii remarked. “Yet, my appreciation for Final Fantasy grew when I saw Final Fantasy X, which I felt epitomized the series’ perfection.”
