Dune: Awakening is a Real Game with a Sandworm Riding

Dune fans’ imaginations have always been captured by the gigantic sandworms of Arrakis. In Dune: Awakening, ambitious players are successfully finding ways to ride the colossal beasts despite there being no official support for doing so. With some people using determination, skill, and gaming mechanics, something that seemed impossible to many to achieve.

The Challenge of Mounting Arrakis’s Giants

Trying to ride a sandworm is one of the most risky things players can do in Dune: Awakening. The creatures weren’t intended to be rideable, according to developer Funcom. They considered adding this feature once during development but cut it at the last moment. But players have become creative to mitigate these restrictions.

To pull this off you must have perfect timing as well as a great deal of understanding of sandworm behavior patterns; and the savvy to make use of abilities and equipment strategically. Similar to other games, players will need to study the attack patterns and movement cycles of a creature before they can attempt to mount it, just like when fighting a hard boss.

Equipment and Abilities for the Perfect Ride

Riding sandworms successfully depends on certain gear and abilities working together to aid a successful sandworm ride. The super-sprint Bindu Sprint gives you enough speed to keep up with the big monsters, while the Full Suspensor Belt provides you with enhanced movement ability that is crucial while mounting.

Also, the Wings equipment of the Emperor gives you better control while you are trying to position on the enormous body of a worm. The right tools combined with quick reflexes create the right conditions to land a successful ride.

The Reality of Sandworm Surfing

Mounting a sandworm is tried and tested by players but it is not an easy task. According to a Reddit user named SgtDolphin, who has shared clips of this working several times, glitching is common for the experience, especially as the sandworm moves and displaces sand.

The player explained that once you mount the worm you don’t control it, and it’s a challenge to stay on. Big riders get thrown off from their big monsters a lot. This process takes a lot of deaths and tries to make it work.  SgtDolphin mentioned that the activity is a pretty dangerous sport and the attempts are risky.

Current State of Dune: Awakening

People are fascinated by the games survival multiplayer. It peaked at Steam concurrent player counts of over 117,000. The high level of player engagement suggests that while the game has merit, it still needs some polishing.

According to early impressions, the gunplay mechanics may need some tweaking. However, there should be plenty of things to explore and discover in the game. Gamers say they’ve invested dozens of hours in playing yet still believe they’ve only begun their journey through the world of Arrakis.

Community Response and Future Potential

The community problem-solved and made sandworm riding a thing. Players are creatures of habit and will always find a workaround when developers forget something or don’t include something. Players can exploit other things.

This discovery has raised the question of whether Funcom might add sandworm riding to the game, since a lot of players want this. The creativity from players as well as the physics systems of the game resulted in a funny feature in Dune: Awakening that brings about an entirely new level of fun.

Riding the sandworms of your favorite desert planet would usually sound like a pitch for a mod rather than a potential feature of a survival game. However, as we have seen with the success of riding attempts in Dune: Awakening, survival games tend to have a sandbox nature that allows players to add their own flavour to features that aren’t officially supported.
