EA Cuts Hundreds of Jobs and Shelves Two Projects Including Titanfall Game

Electronic Arts has reportedly reduced its workforce by 300-400 employees, with approximately 100 of those cuts affecting Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Apex Legends. According to recent reports, Respawn has also discontinued two projects in early development stages, one of which was allegedly a Titanfall-based extraction shooter.

Corporate Restructuring for “Strategic Priorities”

A representative from EA explained that these changes are part of their continued focus on long-term strategic priorities. The spokesperson indicated that the company has made select organizational changes to better align teams and allocate resources toward driving future growth.

Respawn addressed its own workforce reductions and project cancellations in a statement that carefully avoided direct mentions of “layoffs” or “cancellations.” The studio stated they are sharpening their focus for the future, which led to the decision to abandon two early-stage incubation projects and make targeted team adjustments across both Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi teams. According to reports, one of the discontinued projects (code-named R7) was an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe. The other project was reportedly discontinued earlier this year.

Impact on Current and Future Games

Despite these changes, Respawn emphasized that their commitment to player-first experiences remains unchanged. For Apex Legends, this means expanding the game’s potential and investing in the franchise’s future—exploring new experiences that push competitive gameplay boundaries while maintaining the community’s expected standards of competition, creativity, and integrity. The studio also confirmed that another Star Wars Jedi game is in development, which comes as little surprise given the success of the franchise.

Apex Legends, while still popular, has experienced some decline. During EA’s most recent quarterly financial call, the CEO mentioned “Apex 2.0,” describing it as a more substantial update to the overall game experience. He indicated this wouldn’t be released until after the next Battlefield game, which is expected before April 2026. With these recent cuts, however, questions arise about whether announcements regarding Apex 2.0 might come sooner than anticipated—possibly as early as EA’s next quarterly financial report on May 6.
