Eidos Montréal has recently been in the spotlight following a series of layoffs. These job cuts have shed light on the cancellation of a game within the Legacy of Kain franchise among other projects. However, according to famed leaker Tom Henderson, these layoffs aren’t directly tied to the Legacy of Kain game cancellation. Instead, they are associated with the end-of-cycle adjustments for a large-scale game the company is currently developing.
Layoffs Not Linked to Legacy of Kain Cancellation
Tom Henderson clarified on the Insider Gaming podcast that the layoffs were not due to the halted Legacy of Kain game, but were brought on by other factors. Around the same time, Eidos Montréal also canceled the new Deus Ex project. The primary reason for the recent job cuts, Henderson suggests, is the company’s ongoing major game project, which is now winding down its production phase as it moves towards a beta release.
An Ambitious Project in the Works
The team behind the successful Shadow of the Tomb Raider has been working on a significant open-world action-adventure third-person game since 2019. Now internally referred to as P11, the game’s development is nearing completion, resulting in reduced workforce requirements. This project is scheduled for a release next year, sparking speculation about a potential announcement at The Game Awards.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Eidos Montréal has faced multiple project cancellations, including a card game with a narrative twist based on The Lord of the Rings. Reports suggest that the developer has discarded many projects, reaching Project 22, while Project 11 remains unfinished. Their latest release, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, launched in October 2021, didn’t meet sales expectations despite being well-received. The studio aims for success with the P11 project to avoid a fate similar to Monolith Productions.
If that’s the case, we might be getting an announcement at The Game Awards in just a few days.
