Eidos Montréal Potentially Axes Legacy of Kain Revival Amid New Layoffs

Eidos Montréal has been making headlines once again with reports suggesting another round of layoffs. This marks the third time in under two years that the prominent game developer has reduced its workforce, prompting discussions about its future projects and stability.

Continued Layoffs and Project Cancellations

Back in January 2024, it was reported that Eidos Montréal’s anticipated new Deus Ex project was canceled by the parent company, Embracer Group. Following this, efforts to pitch the project to other publishers proved unsuccessful, as many deemed it too niche. More recently, at the end of March 2025, the studio let go of 75 employees after contributing to Playground’s Fable reboot. The latest layoffs involve an undisclosed number of employees working on a canceled dark fantasy action RPG, which was assumed to be tied to the Legacy of Kain series, suggesting further setbacks for the studio.

A Legacy on Hold

Legacy of Kain, a franchise with a storied history, has been largely inactive since the multiplayer game Nosgoth failed to captivate audiences. Although Crystal Dynamics regained the rights to the Legacy of Kain, Tomb Raider, and other IPs from Square Enix three years ago, fans were teased with potential revivals. However, the possible remastered release of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1-2 has been halted, alongside a modern point-and-click game with turn-based combat. Meanwhile, the future of a 3v3 competitive eSports game remains uncertain.

Recent Projects and Future Outlook

Eidos Montréal’s last independent release was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in October 2021. Since then, the studio has engaged in co-developing projects like Grounded 2 with Obsidian Games. Despite these collaborations, the inability to bring a new installment in renowned franchises like Deus Ex and Legacy of Kain raises concerns about the studio’s direction. While outsourcing work continues, the future remains uncertain as fans and industry observers watch closely for Eidos Montréal’s next move.

The Canadian studio had been working on a now-canceled dark fantasy action roleplaying game focused on melee combat and parkour, based on the revival of an established vampire franchise.
