Elden Ring’s highly anticipated “Tarnished Edition” update won’t just introduce new weapons—players will also get two brand-new starting classes. These additions pay homage to classic Souls characters while offering exciting early-game advantages.
According to reports from a recent Tokyo press event, the upcoming classes—currently named “Knight of Ides” and “Heavy Knight”—will bring distinct playstyles and gear to the Lands Between.
Knight of Ides: Style And Substance
The Knight of Ides stands out with armor reminiscent of Demon’s Souls’ iconic Fluted Armor, a design long celebrated for its sleek, knightly aesthetic. But fashion isn’t the only perk—this class also starts with Milady, a Light Greatsword that previously required defeating a late-game boss to obtain.
Milady quickly became a fan-favorite weapon in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, blending the speed of a duelist’s blade with the raw power of a greatsword. For players who favor Dexterity or balanced Strength/Dex builds, the Knight of Ides could be an instant favorite.
Heavy Knight: Pure Brute Force
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Heavy Knight embodies raw power. Clad in imposing black plate armor, this class wields a massive curved greatsword resembling a colossal falchion. The design evokes memories of Dark Souls’ Iron Tarkus, making it a perfect fit for players who prefer overwhelming strength over finesse.
While starting classes in Soulsborne games are more like guidelines than strict paths, these new options provide early access to high-tier gear, giving players a head start on their preferred playstyle.
When to Expect the Update
The Tarnished Edition is expected to launch alongside Nintendo’s Switch 2, but PC players won’t be left behind—the new content should arrive simultaneously. Though Bandai Namco hasn’t confirmed a release date, speculation points to a June 5 debut, aligning with the Switch 2’s rumored launch.
