Esports Global has made a significant move in the esports industry by acquiring National Student Esports (NSE), a major player in student esports. This strategic acquisition marks a new chapter for student esports in the UK, promising to enhance the landscape of tournament organization and educational initiatives.
Bringing Together Two Giants
Alongside the acquisition, Esports Global has tasked the British Esports Federation to oversee the UK university esports scene. This merger unites two of the largest entities in the sector, with NSE’s British University Esports Championship and community programs set to continue unaltered. The collaboration aims to forge a robust pipeline from school to university for aspiring esports talent.
Founded in 2017, NSE boasts impressive statistics, having engaged over 17,800 players from 2,200 teams across 117 universities in the 2024/25 academic year. Its vibrant Discord community reaches more than 180,000 student gamers, highlighting its influence and reach.
British Esports, launched in 2016, is renowned for organizing the Student Champs for educational institutions and managing the National Esports Performance Campus in Sunderland. This facility offers various qualifications, including the Esports BTEC and specialized coaching courses.
Industry Leaders Comment On Deal
Dave Martin, CEO of Esports Global, stated that the deal “marks a pivotal moment for student esports in the UK.” He emphasized that the integration of NSE with British Esports’ infrastructure creates a seamless pathway for talent development.
Alex Coulson, NSE’s Managing Director, echoed the sentiment, calling British Esports a “natural partner” that will unlock further opportunities for student talent.
The acquisition is part of a broader strategy following the launch of the Esports Global Fund LP, which aims to secure $50m (~£39.2m) for investments in esports and gaming. NSE is one of two recent investments by the fund, with another announcement expected shortly.

Under the leadership of Chester King, President of the British Esports Federation, and other notable figures, Esports Global is poised to make significant contributions to the student esports ecosystem. Nick Keller, CEO of Benchmark, highlighted the positive impact on students’ lives, fostering friendships and essential life skills.
This development coincides with the launch of the BUEC Winter season and the 2025/26 British Esports Student Champs, ushering in an exciting era for student esports in the UK.
