First Hotfix for Assassin’s Creed Shadows Targets Stability and Photo Mode Glitches

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has entered the scene with relative success, but even strong launches often come with a to-do list for developers.

Minimal Fixes, But That’s a Good Sign

The debut update for the game, officially known as Patch 1.0.1, is now available. In what’s likely a welcome outcome for the development team, the list of changes introduced is impressively brief.

Here’s what the update includes:

  • General Stability: A number of broad technical problems were resolved.
  • PlayStation 5: An issue in Photo Mode that could lead to a crash when retrieving images for the world map was addressed.
  • PC: Another Photo Mode bug, which could crash the game when capturing a picture, has been fixed.

The phrase “some global issues” leaves room for interpretation, of course. From personal experience, the word “some” can range from trivial to overwhelming, depending entirely on the context and how chaotic things have gotten behind the scenes.

A Surprisingly Stable Release

Even with this limited list of changes, the overall update is quite sizable in terms of file size. PC players will notice a download just over 7 GB. Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 users have a much lighter load at just 1.4 GB. For those playing on Xbox Series X/S or Mac, the update hits a heavier 9 GB.

While minor patches like this are fairly standard, the bigger takeaway might be that Shadows has avoided any major launch catastrophes. Considering how often high-profile games stumble out of the gate, it’s almost remarkable that this one has stayed so steady. Sometimes, the lack of drama is the best kind of news.

Ubisoft Reflects on Shadows’ Strong Debut

Ubisoft has revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows currently stands as the second-largest launch in the franchise’s history. That said, they also pointed out that the top spot belongs to Valhalla, which benefited from a unique period during the Covid-19 pandemic. With people stuck at home and gaming more than ever, Valhalla’s numbers might have had a bit of an artificial boost. Ubisoft seemed to suggest that if those external conditions were removed from the equation, Shadows might have been the top performer instead.

Waiting for the Numbers That Matter

Whether Shadows truly surpasses its predecessors or not is still up in the air—and arguably not the most important part of the story. What’s more telling will be the insights from Ubisoft’s next financial report, which is scheduled for May. That’s when the company is expected to reveal more detailed figures, including the sales performance of Shadows and how it could influence Ubisoft’s broader strategies moving forward.
