Fortnite Continues to Lead as Battle Royale Genre Shows Signs of Decline

A recent report from the gaming industry research group Newzoo suggests that although the popularity of the battle royale genre is beginning to wane, Fortnite remains a dominant force.

According to the 2025 edition of Newzoo’s PC & Console Gaming Report, there have been several noteworthy changes in player behavior and genre preferences. Among the most significant findings is a marked decline in the amount of time players are spending on battle royale titles. Data shows that in 2021, battle royale games made up 19% of total playtime. By 2024, that number had dropped to 12%.

Newzoo’s analysis is based on data collected through its Game Performance Monitor, which evaluates player behavior across 37 international markets—excluding China and India—on platforms such as PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The report highlighted that shooter and battle royale games combined still account for roughly 40% of total gaming time. However, while time spent in battle royale games is shrinking, time spent on other shooters is on the rise.

Fortnite’s Market Share Expands Despite Genre’s Decline

Even as the overall appeal of battle royale titles appears to be decreasing, one game in the category is outperforming the trend. According to Newzoo’s data, Fortnite has seen a significant increase in its share of the battle royale market. In 2021, it held a 43% share, which surged to 77% by 2024. This growth indicates that while the broader genre may be losing ground, Fortnite continues to pull in a substantial portion of the remaining audience.

Role-Playing Games on the Rise

Meanwhile, role-playing games (RPGs) are experiencing a notable upswing. Their share of total playtime grew from 9% in 2021 to 13% in 2024. Newzoo reported that nearly one-fifth of all RPG playtime in 2024 was dedicated to blockbuster titles released in 2023, including Baldur’s Gate 3Diablo IVHonkai: Star RailHogwarts Legacy, and Starfield.

Competition for Playtime Intensifies

Newzoo explained that the battle for player attention—measured in hours and engagement—is becoming increasingly competitive. While established titles like FortniteCall of Duty: Warzone, and Apex Legends continue to hold steady, others have struggled to maintain relevance. At the same time, both shooters and RPGs are steadily carving out larger portions of the market.

The report pointed to breakout hits like Marvel Rivals and Baldur’s Gate 3 as examples of how standout games in these genres are making a major impact.

Fortnite’s Longevity Reflects Its Evolution

Thanks to a steady stream of updates, constant innovations, and a growing assortment of content that spans multiple genres and playstyles, Fortnite has proven resilient amidst shifting market dynamics. However, as player interests evolve over time, it’s likely that trends will continue to change and reshape the landscape.
