Lieutenant Titus has skyrocketed to fame within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, thanks to the breakout success of the game Space Marine 2. This iconic Ultramarines hero has been embraced by Games Workshop, appearing in merchandise, the Warhammer 40,000 episode of Amazon’s animated anthology Secret Level, and various other cameos. However, new developments have elevated Titus’s role not just as a Space Marine, but as a key player in the ongoing Warhammer 40,000 saga.
Promotion for Titus
This week, Games Workshop introduced Captain Demetrian Titus, Master of the Watch, marking his promotion since the canonical events of Space Marine 2 and Secret Level. Titus resumes his post as Captain of the Ultramarines Second Company, a position he previously held before being detained on heresy charges by the Inquisition after the first Space Marine game. The fate of Sevastus Acheran, the former captain we see in Space Marine 2, is grimly uncertain. It seems he may no longer be in the picture.
With his promotion, Titus faces greater challenges: defending the Five Hundred Worlds of Ultramar, the domain of the Ultramarines. As Primarch Roboute Guilliman embarks on his Indomitus Crusade, Titus is tasked with safeguarding these realms against an emerging Necron menace.
To promote this narrative expansion, Games Workshop has unveiled a new trailer featuring Titus as he accepts his new role in what he describes as an “impossible mission.” Titus boasts a striking new look and model for the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game. Joining him are familiar allies: Ancient Gadriel from Space Marine 2 and Veteran Sergeant Metaurus from Secret Level, who is alive and well.
The Expanding Universe
500 Worlds: Titus is the title of the next major narrative expansion for Warhammer 40,000. Reports suggest the expansion will include four books chronicling the Ultramarian Reclamation and the embattled Vespator Front, where Titus and the Ultramarines Second Company are “locked in a desperate struggle against a Necron force rife with the Destroyer curse.”
This is a pivotal moment for both Titus and the Space Marine video game series, underscoring his importance to Warhammer 40,000 and the impactful legacy of Space Marine 2. According to sources, Tim Willits, the development lead at Saber Interactive, remarked that Space Marine 2’s success has introduced countless new fans to the dark and intricate Warhammer 40,000 universe.
“I’ve heard many now believe the Thousand Sons are the sole Chaos faction due to their presence in the game,” Willits reflected on Space Marine 2’s first year.
This misconception extends to the Space Marines, with some assuming the Ultramarines are the only chapter, despite other factions being playable in PvE and PvP modes. “People have assumptions about the Warhammer 40,000 universe that are not correct,” Willits continued. “For example, believing all Space Marines are blue, which is amusing to us.”
What Lies Ahead
With Space Marine 3 on the horizon, speculation abounds as to whether Saber will expand beyond the Ultramarines and Thousand Sons. The narrative hints at the inclusion of Necrons, but could other Space Marine chapters or Chaos factions make an appearance? While Willits remained tight-lipped about Space Marine 3’s details, the possibilities are enticing.
Now that Titus is back, questions arise about Chaplain Leandros’s perspective. Throughout Space Marine 2, Leandros was skeptical of Titus, seeing his actions as signs of corruption. Even though Titus received commendations and support, Leandros remained unconvinced. If Titus can accomplish his mission and defend the 500 worlds, will Leandros finally acknowledge his value? Doubts linger.
All these elements likely weave into the fabric of Space Marine 3. If it follows the 500 Worlds events, we might witness Titus leading grand armies into battle, rather than operating with a lone squad.
