Updated for Minecraft 1.18, this guide outlines everything needed to domesticate wild wolves, turning them into loyal companions for your adventures. Wolves, typically found in small groups, are neutral mobs that can become valuable allies in hostile territories. This walkthrough will cover where to find wolves, the taming process, and tips on keeping them healthy and loyal.
How to Obtain Bones
Bones are the only item that wild wolves accept for taming, making them essential. The easiest way to acquire bones is by defeating Skeletons, which appear at night or in dimly lit environments. After eliminating a Skeleton, there’s a chance it will drop zero to two bones. Although a large number of bones isn’t required, it’s wise to collect extras since some wolves may not respond right away.
Where Wolves Spawn
Wolves generally appear in groups of up to four and are commonly found in specific Biomes. These include:
- Forest
- Wooded Hills
- Taiga
- Giant Tree Taiga
- Snowy Taiga
Exploring these areas increases the chances of encountering wild wolves.
Steps to Tame a Wolf
With bones in hand, approach a wolf and offer the bones by interacting up close. Continue this process until red hearts appear above the wolf’s head — this indicates successful taming. A red collar will then appear around the wolf’s neck, signaling that it has become a companion.
Should the red collar not suit personal preferences, its color can be changed by holding dye and interacting with the wolf.
Understanding Your Tamed Wolf
Once tamed, wolves can be instructed to follow or stay in place. If left in a secure area, a stationary wolf will not despawn or take damage. When commanded to follow, the wolf will assist in combat, attacking any mob that the player engages — with the exception of creepers.
The wolf’s health can be visually gauged by its tail position; a lower tail indicates poorer health. Wolves will also begin to whine when their health is low. To restore health, feed them any kind of raw meat, including rotten flesh.
Tamed wolves offer not only protection but also companionship, enhancing any journey across Minecraft’s varied landscapes.
