Hideo Kojima, the visionary behind Metal Gear and Death Stranding, recently expressed surprise over being linked to a Matrix video game project. No one had ever informed him of any discussions between the Wachowskis and Konami regarding such an opportunity. This revelation has stirred interest in what could have been a groundbreaking collaboration.
Kojima’s Unexpected Revelation
Kojima took to social media to address statements made by Christopher Bergstresser, a former executive at Konami, who suggested that Kojima was considered for a Matrix game. In his post on X, Kojima clarified that he exchanged emails with the Wachowskis as mutual fans and met them during the promotion of the original Matrix movie in Japan back in 1999. However, Kojima mentioned that the possibility of a game project was never part of their discussions.
A Missed Opportunity?
Reflecting on the past, Kojima noted that he was deeply engrossed in developing MGS2 at the time and might not have been able to jump into a new project immediately. However, he speculated that if he had been aware of the offer, there might have been a way to make it work. This potential collaboration between Kojima and the Wachowskis remains an intriguing “what if” scenario in gaming history.
The Matrix Game That Never Was
Had Kojima been given the chance to craft a game based on the Matrix, it could have been a masterpiece, combining his visionary storytelling with the franchise’s unique universe. Even though the Matrix’s popularity has waned since the early 2000s, the concept of a Kojima-directed Matrix game still holds incredible allure. Such a collaboration might have captured the essence of the Matrix in a way that no previous game adaptation has achieved.
