Inside The God Slayer: Developers Share Their Journey in Open World RPG Creation

Pathea Games, renowned for the ‘My Time At’ series, is stepping into the limelight with their boldest endeavor yet, The God Slayer. This open-world steampunk fantasy action RPG marks another significant entry in the growing roster of Chinese-developed AAA action RPGs, joining the ranks of Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong, Leenzee Games’ Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Ultizero Games’ Lost Soul Aside, and S-GAME’s anticipated Phantom Blade Zero.

A New Era for Pathea Games

The God Slayer is slated for a grand launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. However, the timing may coincide with new console releases, and if so, Pathea Games intends to be prepared for that shift.

In a detailed conversation with Yongjin (Aaron) Deng, Pathea’s Business Development Director, the transition from their previous titles to The God Slayer was discussed. While the My Time series honed their skills in open-world RPG development, The God Slayer’s scale and ambition posed new challenges. With a larger team and the adoption of Unreal Engine, Pathea is expanding its expertise to deliver a grand experience.

Crafting a Captivating RPG Experience

The decision to anchor the narrative with a fixed character instead of player customization was driven by the desire for a compelling, cohesive story. By focusing their resources on a single character arc, Pathea aims to deliver a polished and believable narrative.

The God Slayer promises rich RPG elements centering on character growth, deeply intertwined with the unfolding story. Players will witness the protagonist’s transformation from a novice to a seasoned hero through personal trials and a unique elemental combat system.

The game also offers a variety of modes; story mode allows players to explore at their pace, while challenge mode ramps up the difficulty. Importantly, side quests and player choices will shape the game’s progression, impacting main quests through dynamic relationships with NPCs.

Innovative Features and Current Progress

The God Slayer distinguishes itself with a unique steampunk setting and a gameplay design that integrates a time-sensitive mission system and dual identities for players to navigate the world. Although vehicles won’t be featured due to the powerful traversal abilities granted by the elemental system, players will have plenty of opportunities to explore and engage with the world.

Currently in a Pre-Alpha stage, Pathea is focusing on asset integration and mechanical refinement. As they prepare for the anticipated 2027 release, the studio is staying mindful of emerging technologies, particularly the cautious integration of AI in development.

The God Slayer’s development journey is one of ambition and innovation, and players can look forward to an immersive RPG experience that pushes the boundaries of Pathea’s creative vision.
