ICARUS, the sci-fi co-op survival game developed by RocketWerkz and GRIP Studios, is gearing up to make its debut on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X in the first quarter of 2026. This anticipated console version of ICARUS, led by former DayZ frontman Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall, promises enhancements and the inclusion of the New Frontiers expansion, which introduces the alien region of Prometheus and a host of other thrilling features.
From PC Roots to Console Innovation
Initially launched on Steam in late 2021, ICARUS had a challenging start but gradually won over a dedicated fanbase through consistent updates and developer support. Console players can now look forward to a refined edition of the game, enjoying improved gameplay and expansive terrains to explore. The New Frontiers expansion further enriches the experience with new biomes, apex predators, workshop items, and engaging missions.
Dean Hall shared insights into the game’s journey, noting the challenges and collaborations that have led to this console release. Partnering with GRIP Studios, a team with a strong survival game pedigree, has been crucial in preparing the game for consoles, particularly in aspects like controller support. “We partnered with GRIP Studios, a team I was familiar with from my DayZ days, to navigate this new terrain,” Hall explained.
Bridging the Gap Between PC and Console
Console gamers will experience ICARUS differently, with adjustments made for controller navigation. While core gameplay remains consistent, the shift from mouse to controller has necessitated specific changes, ensuring players can seamlessly engage with ICARUS from the comfort of their couches. “We’re working hard to ensure the gaming experience on consoles is as immersive as it is on PC,” Hall stated.
The team is also considering bringing some of these console enhancements back to PC, especially the controller support that console players will enjoy from the start. Hall expressed, “There’s a lot of interest in seeing these changes make their way back to PC.”
The Future of ICARUS
ICARUS has seen many evolutions since its launch, driven by community engagement and feedback. As the game continues to thrive, future expansions and updates promise to keep the adventure fresh and exciting. Developers are keen on continuing to refine the game, drawing on the lessons learned and the robust feedback from its community.
Console releases are an exciting new chapter for ICARUS, and with plans for further expansions and community-driven updates, the game is set for a long and adventurous journey. ICARUS is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X in Q1 2026, bringing its thrilling survival experience to a broader audience.
