The competitive gaming scene faces a significant change as one of its prominent figures steps back. Kakeru ‘Kakeru’ Watanabe, a leading Street Fighter player from ZETA Division, has officially announced his retirement. The news comes as a shock to fans and the esports community alike, marking the end of a remarkable career filled with impressive achievements and memorable moments.

ZETA Division’s Street Fighter player Kakeru ‘Kakeru’ Watanabe has announced his retirement from competitive play.

Reasons Behind Kakeru’s Retirement

Kakeru, the Capcom Cup 11 champion, disclosed that a “neural dysfunction” has compelled him to cease competing at the high level he is known for. His decision was shared on social media, following a two-month absence from the competitive scene. He was initially set to participate in the Street Fighter League Pro-JP 2025 as part of ZETA Division. “The team and I have carefully discussed the possibilities for continuing my activities in the future, but I judged that it would be difficult to continue as a player,” Kakeru explained. He plans to leave ZETA Division by the year’s end to focus on recuperating.

Looking Back at a Celebrated Career

Kakeru ventured into Street Fighter esports in 2021, quickly making a name for himself in the scene. His victory at Capcom Cup 11 in March solidified his status as a top Japanese player, further proven by a runner-up finish at Evo 2025. Throughout his career, Kakeru amassed $1.4 million in winnings, making him one of the most successful players in the game’s history.

ZETA Division In Street Fighter

Since joining the Street Fighter esports scene in 2024, ZETA Division has established a strong presence, with nine players actively competing. The team is currently fourth in the Street Fighter League Pro-JP 2025 regular season, aiming for a top spot to secure a playoff position. The winner of the league gains direct entry to the SFL World Championship 2025 and a share of a ¥15 million prize pool. In light of Kakeru’s retirement, ZETA Division has brought in ‘Yamaguchi’, who recently achieved a top 12 finish at Evo France 2025.

Kakeru’s departure marks the end of an era in Street Fighter esports, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration for future players.
