Larian Studios, fresh off the monumental success of Baldur’s Gate 3, is fully engaged in creating its next major project. CEO Swen Vincke revealed that the team is currently deep in production, describing the new title as incredibly ambitious and already progressing well. This upcoming game marks a bold step forward, as the studio aims to redefine its development process to better handle complex RPGs.
Tackling Development Challenges
Vincke spoke about the difficulties traditional game production cycles can cause, especially the downtime between pre-production and full development. He explained that when initial planning phases are incomplete, specialized teams like animators, modelers, and scripters can be left waiting, which slows the entire process.
To combat this, Larian is now working on two projects simultaneously, a move designed to keep teams active and engaged throughout the cycle. Vincke acknowledged that making highly intricate RPGs with extensive player choices and branching paths demands a more efficient structure, and this new method could solve longstanding bottlenecks.
Aiming for Smarter, Faster Production
Vincke hopes that within five years, Larian will have fully adapted to this model. The goal is to build a system where, as one game nears completion, the next is already taking shape without lengthy delays. He emphasized that achieving a sustainable and enjoyable workflow for the team is just as important as maintaining creative excellence.
Although there is optimism about the new approach, Vincke admitted there will likely be obstacles along the way. He noted that challenges are inevitable but remains confident that pushing through them will ultimately result in stronger, more innovative games.
Looking Ahead to the Future
While no release dates have been set, Vincke humorously suggested that showing off the next major title before 2030 is a personal priority, joking that anything longer might cause trouble at home. Larian’s ambitious new plans promise a future filled with expansive worlds and even more dynamic storytelling.
