Larian Studios has stirred excitement with the unveiling of a new Divinity game at The Game Awards 2025. This revelation, teased by a real-life statue in the Mojave Desert and introduced by host Geoff Keighley, was later confirmed through a European trademark that linked the teaser to the esteemed Divinity series. The much-anticipated trailer then captivated audiences at the event.
Game Details Revealed
Initially shrouded in mystery, the nature of the new Divinity game sparked speculation, especially since Larian Studios stated that players need not be familiar with Original Sin 2. This led many to theorize that the studio might venture into the action RPG genre. However, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke has clarified in an interview that Divinity will remain a turn-based roleplaying game. The studio aims to elevate the experience beyond their acclaimed title Baldur’s Gate 3, which has sold over 20 million units. Vincke emphasizes that this will be a more advanced and innovative offering, promising unique narratives and fresh RPG elements that players have not encountered before.
Development Timeline and Technological Advancements
Larian Studios plans to accelerate the development of the game, aiming for a healthier three to four-year cycle instead of the prolonged six years. While early access is anticipated, it will not be available before 2027, with a full release expected between 2028 and 2029. To expedite the process, the team is employing generative AI tools for tasks like writing placeholder text and creating concept art. Although no AI-generated content will be included in the final game, these tools are proving invaluable in streamlining development. The studio is also working on a new engine to enhance streaming performance, addressing past issues encountered in Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios currently employs 530 staff across offices in Asia, Europe, and North America.
