Riot Games is set to introduce an innovative twist to competitive play by testing coach communication during the 2026 League of Legends Championship (LCP) Split 1 and the LCK Cup’s group stage. This move is expected to enhance dynamics on the virtual battlefield, allowing coaches to offer strategic input in real time as matches unfold.
LCK Coach Voice
For the LCK, the new ‘Coach Voice’ feature will allow coaches to communicate with their team up to three times during a series for a period of 45 seconds each. The communication process is streamlined with predetermined procedures to minimize interruptions in live matches. Up to two managers, coaches, and analysts can speak during these intervals but must refrain from contacting anyone outside the team until the conclusion of the match. Interestingly, this feature will be active during live gameplay without separate time-outs, and coaches will view the game as players do, without spectator mode access. Teams have the choice to opt-in, but the decision must be confirmed before the match. The LCK will analyze the impact of Coach Voice on match outcomes and decide on its future implementation across the league, including potential broadcast integration.
LCP Coach Comms
The LCP will also experiment with coach communications during the first split of its regular season. Like the LCK, this will entail three opportunities for coaches to engage with players during a 45-second window. However, LCP teams must designate one member of the coaching staff before a game to handle communication duties, with the option to switch after the game ends. At the conclusion of Split 1, a comprehensive review will determine if this feature will continue in future splits and regional tournaments.
How Will It Impact Esports?
The introduction of coach communications in esports opens up a new realm for strategic depth, enabling coaches to offer real-time guidance that could be pivotal in swinging the outcome of a match. If successful in the LCK and LCP, this feature could potentially be adopted by the LEC, LCS, and international tournaments, fundamentally changing how competitive League of Legends is played.
