Legendary Fallout Creator Joins Obsidian Entertainment Full-Time

Tim Cain, renowned for being the original creator of the Fallout series, has rejoined Obsidian Entertainment as a full-time member of their team. His return marks the end of his semi-retirement, which began in June 2020 after a significant nine-year tenure at the studio. During his previous stint, Cain contributed to several successful projects like South Park: The Stick of Truth, Pillars of Eternity, and Tyranny, and co-directed The Outer Worlds with Leonard Boyarsky. Although he had recently worked as a creative consultant on The Outer Worlds 2, released just two months ago, Cain is now fully committed to Obsidian once more.

Tim Cain Returns to Obsidian

The news of Cain’s return was revealed on his personal YouTube channel, where he has been sharing insights into the gaming industry. In his video, Cain mentioned his relocation back to Southern California to work directly at Obsidian’s office. He clarified that he is no longer operating as a contractor for other projects, although he acknowledged that there are games he has worked on, outside of Obsidian, that may or may not see completion. The uncertainty in the industry between 2020 and 2025 has left some of these projects in limbo.

Speculation and Hints About New Projects

While Cain remains tight-lipped about his current project at Obsidian, owing to non-disclosure agreements, fans are already buzzing with speculation. A recent rumor has suggested that Obsidian might not be developing a new installment of The Outer Worlds, which, combined with Cain’s return, has sparked hopes among fans for a potential New Vegas 2. Cain, however, hinted that fans might be off track in their guesses, suggesting the possibility of a brand new IP.

A Promising Future for RPGs

Cain’s return is an exciting development for the RPG community, given his storied history with titles like Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and The Temple of Elemental Evil. With Obsidian aiming to produce outstanding RPGs for the foreseeable future without succumbing to the pressures of expanding into a larger entity, Cain’s expertise is a valuable asset. The studio is dedicated to crafting deeper RPG experiences, a sentiment echoed by the director of The Outer Worlds 2, and Cain’s involvement is set to contribute significantly to this mission.
