Little Nightmares Story Explained Chronologically: Complete Timeline Analysis

The Little Nightmares is a collection of surreal horror adventures set in a haunting world, where visual storytelling, cryptic plots, and tragic characters drive the action. Even though the statements were issued at different times, putting things in order as they occurred along the timeline shows a tragic and disturbing story of trust, infidelity, survival, and fate.

The entire story is reviewed in very little nightmares, Little Nightmares II, Secrets of the Maw, and Little Nightmares I . In true timeline order. On our journey we witness the journeys of the girl in the yellow raincoat, Mono, Six, and the Runaway Kid, all of whom are trying to survive this nightmarish world that is bustling with mutated adults, deformed creatures, and unending darkness.

The Beginning Very Little Nightmares – The Girl in the Yellow Raincoat

The story starts with a Very Little Nightmares mobile prequel that will introduce the yellow raincoat girl. Her hot air balloon hits a cheery mansion called The Nest, which is actually filled with creepy corridors, doll-like constructs, and an ominous dread.

As the girl walks around the big house, she sees a quiet child who runs away when he is spotted. This child later revealed to be Six but her importance is not felt much here. The girl quickly comes across the Craftsman who looks to be converting kids into dolls. While she frees a child from inside a cage out of kindness, the child later loses their life and becomes a doll due to being saved too late.

As she goes deeper inside the Nest, she meets The Butler, a hovering character with telekinetic powers who does the work of the Nest. However, the worst resident is The Pretender, who is presented as a lonely child but has tea parties with dolls she has made. The girl now sees her dragging the child she had freed; the obsession has corrupted the woman and has isolated her from reality.

Butler runs after the girl as she tries to escape. She meets Six again for a brief moment and they run away from the adults. At the cliff’s edge, during the conclusion of the final match, the girl saves Six from death by falling. Next, Six gets revenge by hurling a rock at The Pretender. While it does not kill her, it sends all three crashing into the sea.

The girl is dead, the only thing left is the yellow raincoat. Six makes it to the end and begins her journey as a complex character.

The Rise and Fall of Mono: Little Nightmares II 

The events unfold in Little Nightmares II, which stars Mono in the main role. When he opens his eyes near a television in a dark woodland, dreams of a door with an eye. He quickly discovers six locked within a basement and helps her out. Their uneasy partnership begins.

The hunter who owns the cabin chases the duo but is killed with his own weapon turned on him by the duo. Their raft carries them to the Pale City, a crumbling urban nightmare where televisions broadcast signals that mesmerize its population an urban nightmare.

These broadcasts of TV take over Mono’s mind as he gets attracted to them. In the deserted School, the young man and lady strike a confrontation with creepy porcelain Bullies and their terrifying teacher whose neck stretches like a serpent. After saving Six from captivity, the two face the next horror: the Hospital.

Inside its decaying walls, they avoid monstrous Patients – mutated mannequin-like things – while being hunted by the Doctor, who tortures them in horrible ways. They eventually vanquish him by enticing him into a furnace and igniting it. Six observes the execution, and she seems to be calm.

As they move forward, they encounter the Viewers, adults lost in the endless stream of the television signal. Once more, Mono is yanked into a transmission, this time creating a portal leading to an extended corridor as he releases the Thin Man. In a horrifying development, the Thin Man captures Six while leaving only her shadow behind.

Now able to enter and leave through TVs himself, Mono follows the trail and confronts the Thin Man in a climactic battle which warps the world around them. When Mono wins, he discovers that their powers were similar, foreshadowing a disaster.

Inside the Signal Tower, Mono finds Six has been changed into a monster due to her obsession with a distorted music box. Destroying the box turns her back to normal, but they get betrayed before they escape. While Mono hangs from a cliff, Six holds his hand and lets go. Mono falls. Six survives.

Mono wakes up in a fleshy void and becomes the Thin Man he fought in a horrifying ending. The circle is complete now, creating a loop of destiny that cannot be broken.

The tale of the Runaway Kid: Secrets of the Maw

Although Mono and Six’s story comes to a tragic end, Secrets of the Maw delves into the experience of another character: The Runaway Kid. His story unfolds in three chapters: The Depths, The Hideaway and The Residence on board The Maw, a repulsive underwater resort for grotesque elites.

He tackles first The Granny, a submerged horror lurking in flooded chambers. He uses humor and electricity to win against her by throwing a television in the water. Shortly after, Six appears briefly in the distance while he is captured by the Janitor and put in a cage.

Hiding in the furnace rooms, he encounters the Gnomes, timid beings who come to trust him after he shows kindness. Together, they stoke the forces animating the Maw’s hidden machinery, unaware of the reason. The Kid climbs to the House, where he meets The Lady, who is combing her hair in front of a broken mirror.

Child-like shadows that launch aggressive assaults. The Kid battles them off with light and retrieves statues that are hidden, but everything turns dark when he sneaks a peek at The Lady’s face. This act seals his fate.

He wakes as a Gnome—transformed permanently. He presents Six (in Little Nightmares I) with a sausaged and at the last, he is eaten by her.

The last chapter (and first game released) follows Six, now at the very heart of the Maw. Whether by her own choice or by compulsion (depending on your interpretation), Six makes her way down into the abyss from within a suitcase. Hungers and fearful, she takes of other children’s food, eats a rat and even munches on a live gnome — a sign of her growing unfeelingness.

She has many dangers the blind but deadly Janitor, the ugly twin Chefs, and the Guests that shove their faces full of meat. These gluttonous figures also try to eat her because they are hungry too.

She eventually finds the Lady, a woman who will not look in the mirror. Using a mirror, Six defeats her in battle. Once more hungry Six eats the lady and absorbs her powers. She now has the ability to touch people and drain them of life.

Six, now unrestrained, walks among the feasting Guests killing only with his glance. As the Maw doors open, she steps through them changed.

Why Did Six Betray Mono?

The betrayal of Six is one of the most hotly debated moments in Little Nightmares II. Several theories aim to explain her choice.

  1. Recognition of Fate.

Seeing Mono’s face may have made Six aware that he will become the Thin Man. She tried to break the cycle by letting him fall.

  1. Resentment and Loss.

Mono broke Six’s music box, which represented her weak sense of control and comfort. That lost thing, although it saved her, created a rift that she couldn’t forgive.

  1. Reality Distortion.

 Six’s perception could be significantly affected in the Signal Tower. Mono may not have been considered a friend by her at all in the end.

The betrayal at the end is left open to interpretation, which adds to the series’ tragic depth.

A Never-Ending Nightmare

Every choice, every death, every act of betrayal seems to be inevitable, yet each one begs a return to the moment before. Mono may have become the Thin Man and Six free, but the nightmare doesn’t quite end. It simply waits for the next cycle to begin.
