Square Enix has rolled out a new patch for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, bringing a range of refinements that fans have eagerly anticipated. The most immediate improvement is seen in travel mechanics—players now move significantly faster while navigating by boat or riding the mystical creature Ramia. Additionally, when opening the menu during these journeys, the speed will no longer be reset, allowing for a more fluid exploration experience.
A new quality-of-life feature has also been added: when flying with Ramia, pressing the menu button lets players toggle between automatic and manual flight modes, offering better control in the skies.
Upgrades to Vocations and Character Abilities
Character progression sees some meaningful adjustments, particularly benefiting the Hero and Martial Artist roles. Both now enjoy an increased critical hit rate, providing more impactful attacks. The Hero’s techniques—Falcon Slash and Gigaslash—have been powered up, alongside the Warrior’s Cutting Edge ability, giving these vocations more punch in battle.
The update also makes gear adjustments. Priests can now wear the Duplic Hat, and Monster Wranglers receive changes to two key abilities. Monster Pile-On now varies in strength until all friendly monsters are present and can strike between three to five times. Meanwhile, the Wild Side skill’s magic point cost is now set at 30 MP.
Balanced Battles and Smarter Enemies
Combat mechanics have been reworked to make engagements more balanced and less repetitive. Some enemies can no longer spam the same moves multiple times within a single turn. For example, specific foes will avoid using defensive skills like Defending Champion consecutively after becoming the last standing enemy.
Boss fights under the Draconian Quest difficulty have become tougher, with stronger resistance to status ailments. At the same time, changes have been implemented to prevent both enemies and allies from being hit by the same negative status effects repeatedly.
Two monster types—Metal Chimaera and Hardy Hand—now yield more experience, rewarding players for tackling these tougher encounters. Additionally, overall defense values for most monsters have been reduced, excluding metal-type creatures, to quicken the pace of battles. Minor tweaks to damage output round out the combat adjustments.
Quality-of-Life Features and Hidden Extras
Beyond battle and character tweaks, this update introduces a variety of smaller but meaningful additions. The Mini Medal Manor is now automatically marked as a Zoom destination once visited, saving time for travelers.
A newly introduced shortcut system lets players assign spells and skills to specific buttons, streamlining in-combat decision-making. Details on using this feature can be found under Traveller’s Tips in-game.
The Temple of Trials has seen two modifications: only ten Elfin Elixirs are now required to pass one of its tests, and a new treasure chest has been placed inside, containing an extra Gringham Whip.
Bug fixes include resolving a glitch where stat boosts from Seeds of Life or Magic would incorrectly double after leveling up. Additionally, some trophy and achievement issues have been corrected—players can now reclaim missing unlocks through the in-game menu under Misc. > Info.
A Refined Experience for a Classic Adventure
This update, version 1.2.0.0, reinforces Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake as a strong return to a beloved title, offering smoother gameplay and better pacing without sacrificing the nostalgic appeal. By polishing both the core systems and subtle elements, Square Enix continues to demonstrate its commitment to modernizing classic adventures while respecting their roots.
