Offset Attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds introduce an exciting way to interrupt monster aggression and create new openings for damage. While targeting red-highlighted weak spots is still the most straightforward method to knock monsters down, Offset Attacks offer a more strategic and cinematic approach. These counter-style maneuvers allow hunters to parry an incoming strike, knocking the creature off-balance and giving the player a precious opportunity to capitalize on its vulnerability.
What Are Offset Attacks?
Offset Attacks are a newly introduced mechanic in Monster Hunter Wilds that function similarly to a parry. When executed successfully, they briefly stagger a monster, often bringing airborne targets crashing to the ground. Though the window to follow up is brief, the impact is significant. These moments are not just effective but also visually striking, adding a dramatic layer to the combat.
Each Offset Attack must directly intercept a monster’s physical move to trigger the effect. Energy-based projectiles and ranged attacks do not count. Once an Offset Attack has been performed on a monster, it begins to develop resistance, meaning subsequent attempts will be more difficult. In most encounters, it’s rare to land more than two successful Offset Attacks on the same monster.

Offset Attack Mechanics by Weapon
Only six of the fourteen weapons available in Monster Hunter Wilds come equipped with a unique Offset Attack. Though the concept remains consistent, each weapon has its own setup and timing, with some being more demanding than others.
Great Sword
Among the simplest Offset Attacks to perform, the Great Sword’s version can be charged. The attack is initiated by holding down both attack buttons and releasing them so the slash aligns with the monster’s strike. On PlayStation, this is done with Triangle and Circle; on Xbox, with Y and B. Notably, the Great Sword is one of two weapons that can follow up the Offset Attack with an additional strike by pressing Triangle or Y.

Hammer
Precision is key with the Hammer. It has two Offset Attack variations. The first activates at the end of its basic combo chain—pressing Triangle or Y three times. The second requires the hunter to enter the Spinning Bludgeon state (Triangle+Circle / Y+B) and then land the third spin with Triangle or Y.
Heavy Bowgun
The Heavy Bowgun’s Offset Attack is tied to its Wyverncounter Ignition special ammo. To activate it, players must enter Ignition Mode using Circle or B, then hold L2 and Triangle (or LT and Y) to charge and unleash the counter.
Hunting Horn
This weapon involves the most elaborate setup. The Offset Attack, known as Offset Melody, becomes available after playing a sequence of four specific notes. On PlayStation, the sequence is Triangle+Circle, Circle, Triangle+Circle, Triangle, followed by Triangle+Circle+R2 to execute the melody. On Xbox, it’s Y+B, B, Y+B, Y, then Y+B+RT.
Insect Glaive
The Insect Glaive offers two Offset Attack options, but both require the Red Extract. Only the first hit in each technique counts as an Offset Attack. Descending Slash is performed by holding and releasing Circle (or B) while grounded. Descending Thrust uses the same input, but while airborne.

Switch Axe
This weapon’s Offset Attack is closely related to the Great Sword’s, though it lacks a charging option. While in Axe Mode, press Triangle+Circle or Y+B to initiate it. Follow-up attacks can be executed using either of the same buttons for a Heavy Slam, or R2/RT for a Morph Slash that transitions into Sword Mode.
Integrating Offset Attacks into Combat Strategy
Offset Attacks are best used in conjunction with other advanced combat tools and strategies. Building armor sets that enhance these counters can give players a significant edge. For instance, skills like Doshaguma’s Might grant extra bonuses when a successful Offset Attack lands. By incorporating these counters into the broader mechanics of Monster Hunter Wilds, hunters can exert control over even the most ferocious creatures and maintain momentum in long fights.
With practice and the right timing, mastering Offset Attacks will not only make battles more dynamic but also give hunters the stylish edge they’re looking for.
