Mastering Offset Attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds

Offset Attacks are a new combat mechanic introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds, designed specifically for the game’s most powerful weapons. These attacks emphasize deliberate, high-impact strikes aimed at unbalancing monsters, and they reward precise timing and strategic execution. This guide breaks down how Offset Attacks work and how to perform them effectively.

Understanding Offset Attacks

An Offset Attack is a unique move available only to certain heavy weapons in the game. Each weapon that can execute an Offset Attack has its own version of the move, which is clearly marked in the weapon’s control list. For instance, the Great Sword features an Offset Rising Slash, which can be executed by holding and releasing Triangle and Circle (or Y and X, depending on the platform).

Only the following heavy-class weapons are capable of performing Offset Attacks:

  • Great Sword
  • Hammer
  • Hunting Horn
  • Switch Axe
  • Heavy Bowgun
  • Insect Glaive

Executing an Offset Attack

After equipping one of the supported weapons, players can begin using Offset Attacks in battle. The core goal is to deal Offset damage, which accumulates similarly to mounting damage. As the Offset damage builds up, it eventually sets the stage for a flinch response from the monster.

To trigger this flinch, the Offset Attack must land just before the monster delivers its own attack. The game provides a forgiving window of time, allowing the move to connect slightly before or even just after the monster attacks—provided the hunter remains standing. This flexibility is aided by the hyper-armor effect granted during an Offset Attack, reducing the chance of being interrupted.

Upon successfully landing the attack and meeting the required build-up, a distinct flinching animation will play, and the hunter will gain the opportunity to unleash a powerful follow-up move.

Offset Attack Mechanics and Strategy

Similar in concept to Power Clashing, Offset Attacks benefit from a unique mechanic: their progress does not decay over time. This means that once Offset damage has been applied, it won’t diminish if the player takes a break from using these specific attacks. Hunters are encouraged to keep up the pressure, knowing their effort will continue building toward a payoff.

Offset Attacks offer a dynamic layer of strategy for players wielding heavy weapons. By mastering the timing and understanding the flow of battle, hunters can use this mechanic to control fights and create powerful openings against even the toughest monsters.
