Anticipation is in the air as Nintendo fans await the release of more affordable Switch 2 cartridges. Game publishers are eager for these alternatives to Game-Key Cards, yet one developer anticipates its titles will still carry an additional $10 charge when transitioning to full-fledged game cards.
A Shift in Strategy for Game Developers
Inin Games, the publisher of R-Type Dimensions 3, recently declared its plans to utilize two new cartridge size options from Nintendo. These options are set to replace the costly 64GB carts or the cheaper Game-Key Card alternatives currently available to developers.
However, Inin Games has since revised its statement, clarifying that Nintendo has yet to officially announce any changes regarding cartridge storage capacities. In a subsequent social media post, they emphasized that previous references should not be taken as official Nintendo information.
R-Type Dimensions 3: A New Physical Release
Despite the communication hiccup, Inin Games is moving forward with the physical release of R-Type Dimensions 3. The adjusted announcement hinted at newfound production possibilities, potentially thanks to smaller cartridge sizes, enabling this shift.
While Game-Key Cards have faced criticism from Switch 2 fans, they remain a practical choice for games exceeding 64GB, offering an economical alternative for both publishers and players.
Illustrating this, Inin Games plans to transition R-Type Dimensions 3 to physical cartridges instead of Game-Key Cards. These cartridges will be priced €10 (over $11) higher, although this remains cheaper than the previously estimated €15 increase had they opted for standard 64GB cards. Yet, it’s important to note that there is no confirmation of smaller cartridge sizes at present.
