Nintendo Switch 2 Surpasses 10 Million Units Sold, Exceeding Its Predecessor

Nintendo has unveiled impressive sales figures for its latest console, the Nintendo Switch 2, in their recently released quarterly and half-yearly financial report for 2025, covering April to September. The data suggests that the Switch 2 is off to a much stronger start than its predecessor.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Triumphs in Sales

As of September 30, the Nintendo Switch 2 has already surpassed the original Switch by selling 10.36 million units. This achievement is particularly notable as it took the original Switch about ten months to reach similar numbers. Additionally, software sales for the Switch 2 have reached 20.62 million units, averaging close to two games per console.

Successful Game Launches Propel Software Sales

Leading the charge in software sales is the exclusive launch title, Mario Kart World, which alone accounted for 9.57 million units. Another title, Donkey Kong Bananza, also performed well, selling 3.49 million units from July to September.

Future Predictions and Market Challenges

With these results, Nintendo has revised its sales expectations for the fiscal year ending March 2026. Initially predicting 15 million units, they now forecast 19 million Nintendo Switch 2 units sold in its first year. This is particularly impressive given the ongoing challenges posed by US tariffs, which had led DFC Intelligence to lower its forecast from 17 million to 15 million units.

During the same period, the original Nintendo Switch sold 1.89 million units, with software sales reaching 61.56 million units. Although Nintendo has slightly lowered its hardware forecast for the older console from 4.5 million units to 4 million, they have increased their software forecast to 125 million copies from the previous estimate of 105 million. Since its 2017 launch, the Nintendo Switch has sold 154 million units. Despite this success, it seems unlikely to surpass Sony’s PlayStation 2, which holds the record with 160.6 million units sold, but this is not a major concern for Nintendo.
