As the release of the highly anticipated Switch 2 console approaches, Nintendo has partnered with key online marketplaces in Japan to tackle the issue of scalping. With demand for the new console vastly exceeding supply, these efforts aim to prevent the unauthorized resale of the Switch 2 at inflated prices.
Nintendo is working closely with Mercari Inc., Yahoo Line Corporation, and Rakuten Group Inc. to implement measures that will restrict fraudulent listings of the Switch 2 and other Nintendo products. The partnership covers the major resale platforms in Japan: Mercari, Yahoo Auctions/Yahoo Flea Market, and Rakuten Rakuma.
Yahoo Auctions Enforces a Complete Ban on Switch 2 Listings
Yahoo Auctions has taken a strong stance, implementing a complete ban on all Switch 2 listings. This policy will take effect starting June 5, 2025, the official release date of the console. Both Yahoo Auctions and Yahoo Flea Market will no longer allow Switch 2 listings, and any violators will face the removal of their posts or possible account suspension. This ban is part of Yahoo’s “prohibited items” policy, which targets high-demand products to prevent price gouging and stock hoarding.
Other Marketplaces Also Tighten Policies
Rakuten Rakuma has introduced its own policy, which bans Switch 2 listings only before the official release. The platform reminded users that it is against their policy to list products they do not have in hand or whose condition is unknown. This rule aims to discourage resellers from exploiting the pre-release hype.
Mercari, meanwhile, has committed to stronger enforcement of its guidelines. Since March 2025, Mercari has required ID verification for users selling high-value items, a rule that will now apply to those listing Switch 2 consoles.
Combating Scams and Fraudulent Activity
The Switch 2’s immense popularity has resulted in more than 2.2 million entries for its official lottery, far surpassing Nintendo’s initial expectations and supply. Unfortunately, this high demand has also led to a rise in scams, including fraudulent emails claiming fake lottery wins to steal payment and personal information. Nintendo has issued warnings to customers about these deceptive tactics and is working to safeguard consumers from falling victim to such scams.
