The gaming world is buzzing with excitement as the Nintendo Switch 2 shatters sales records. Between June 5 and September 30, the console sold an extraordinary 10.36 million units, securing its place as the most successful console launch to date. With such impressive numbers, Nintendo has confidently adjusted its hardware sales forecast for the year, now anticipating 19 million units sold by March 2026.
Nintendo Switch 2’s Unstoppable Momentum
To grasp the sheer magnitude of Switch 2’s success, consider this: it has doubled the two-quarter launch sales of its predecessor, the Switch 1, in just four months. The original Switch managed 4.7 million units in its first six months back in 2017. Even compared to the PlayStation 5, which sold 7.8 million units in the two quarters post-launch despite stock shortages, the Switch 2 is leading the charge.
Flagship Titles Leading the Charge
Mario Kart World, the flagship game for the Switch 2, has already achieved 9.57 million sales, with 8.1 million of these coming from bundled purchases. Intriguingly, over a million players opted to purchase it separately at $80. Following closely is Donkey Kong Bananza, which has reached 3.49 million sales since its debut in July. Super Mario Party Jamboree also made waves, with 1.16 million copies sold between April and September, thanks in part to its Switch 2 Edition released in July.
Although there’s no mention of Pokémon Legends Z-A in the current data, the title has already made headlines by selling 5.8 million copies during its launch week. This success suggests it will rank among the top sellers in the upcoming financial reports.
Legacy of the Original Switch
Meanwhile, sales of the original Switch remain robust. The enduring popularity of games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues, with 1.37 million units sold over the past six months. Currently, the original Nintendo Switch has reached 154 million units sold, trailing the best-selling Nintendo DS by just 10,000 units. The ultimate goal remains clear: surpass the PlayStation 2, the best-selling console ever. Nintendo’s projection of 156 million units by March 2026 suggests the iconic console will come tantalizingly close to this milestone.
