While many developers are shifting toward digital-only releases for the Nintendo Switch 2, one company is doubling down on delivering true physical editions—ensuring players get the entire game on the cartridge, not just a download key.
Limited Run Games Stands by Physical Media
At PAX East 2025, Limited Run Games clarified its approach to Switch 2 cartridges in a discussion with Boss Rush. The publisher, known for bringing digital and retro titles to physical formats, emphasized that nearly all its releases will contain the full game on the cartridge.
The only exceptions will be certain partnered titles outside its main numbered lineup, where the decision will rest with the developer or publisher.
Why Game-Key Cards Are Causing Debate
Nintendo has confirmed that Game-Key Cards—physical cards that unlock digital downloads—will be cheaper to produce and won’t be tied to a single account, allowing resale. However, this move has drawn criticism, as players may need to invest in additional storage upgrades for their Switch 2.
The console comes with 256GB of internal storage, but a portion is reserved for system files, meaning frequent downloads could quickly eat up space.
Which Switch 2 Games Will Be Fully Physical?
Not all is lost for physical media enthusiasts. Several first-party Nintendo titles, including Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong: Bananza, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, will ship with complete games on the cartridge.
A selection of third-party games, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, will also offer full physical editions. Meanwhile, Game-Key Card releases will be clearly labeled on their packaging, so buyers know what they’re getting.
For gamers who prefer owning their games outright, Limited Run Games’ commitment ensures that physical collections won’t disappear just yet.
