Outsmarting The Wise in Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Complete Strategy Guide

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players are thrust into an intense political standoff with deadly consequences. The mission, titled Darkness Falls, kicks off at Kojufuji Temple where tensions between opposing factions are high. The goal is to uncover the identity of a hidden enemy, all while navigating an escalating conflict. Although players can choose between Yasuke or Naoe, sticking with Yasuke for the entire sequence offers distinct advantages.

Preparing for Battle

Before jumping into this confrontation, it’s wise to enhance Yasuke’s abilities. Leveling up his Knowledge to at least Level 3 enables an upgrade to his Bull Rush move. If available, also unlock Impenetrable Defense, a skill that lets him block and counter five consecutive hits. These boosts can significantly reduce the difficulty of what’s to come.

The Gathering at Kojufuji Temple

Once the initial cutscene ends, Yasuke arrives at the temple to begin peace talks led by a figure named Joken. Despite the diplomatic setting, things quickly deteriorate. Dialogue with Ayako and Junkei reveals entrenched distrust: Ayako remains defensive, while Junkei continues to act out of paranoia and hostility.

Then comes Kojiro—a wild card presence who disrupts the scene by pointing out a nearby marksman. Naoe swiftly neutralizes the threat, but the damage is done. The failed peace attempt spirals into chaos, forcing players to accuse someone of being The Wise Onryo. Regardless of who’s accused, the mission unfolds similarly, though naming the correct target avoids unnecessary ridicule.

The true Onryo is Joken. Yasuke will confront him with a well-aimed blade, triggering a fierce battle.

Combat Phase One: Surviving the Skirmish

A group of enemies rushes in immediately following Joken’s exposure. While they aren’t heavily armored, their fast attacks can still cause serious damage if Yasuke gets cornered. Positioning and crowd control are key—use Yasuke’s strength to manage groups and stay on the offensive.

Once they’re down, Yasuke must chase Joken through a confined courtyard. Here, players can eliminate enemies hiding behind pillars or use Bull Rush to charge through. When facing a larger group, it’s smarter to wait for them to cluster near an explosive barrel and take them out with a bow or firearm.

Combat Phase Two: Facing the Messenger

Up next is a deadlier foe—the Messenger. Connected to the Kurai Eikyou, this spear-wielding fighter is tougher than Joken. His long and relentless combo chains demand a defensive approach. Players with Impenetrable Defense can use it to interrupt his rhythm, while others should rely on well-timed parries to create openings. Each opportunity to strike must be fully exploited due to his resilience.

Final Encounter: Defeating Joken

After the Messenger falls, Yasuke moves on to confront Joken once more. While not as formidable, Joken can still be tricky. His attacks have irregular timing, and he often follows up with fast red counters when provoked. His poison-coated katana adds to the danger. Still, his lack of armor means the fight ends quickly once players adapt to his patterns.

Post-Battle Rewards and a Supernatural Twist

Successfully finishing the mission nets players a kusarigama, 4000 XP, and a traditional tea set. But the surprises aren’t over yet.

Bringing the tea set to Sen no Rikyu reveals a ghostly twist—Kojiro, who’s been guiding events, has actually been dead for years. This revelation adds a mysterious layer to the story, hinting at supernatural involvement and deeper secrets yet to unfold.

Final Thoughts

This mission in Assassin’s Creed Shadows blends intense combat with storytelling rich in betrayal, strategy, and even ghostly illusions. Mastering Yasuke’s skills and approaching fights with tactical patience is key to uncovering the truth and walking away victorious.
